Old and new together
Today I picked up my new car from the dealer, an Engine Red Hyundai i30 N. For those of you not familiar with the car, it’s basically Hyundai’s first attempt at a properly hot hatch for more performance focused buyers. So it tends to go up against things like the Golf GTI and Peugeot 308 GTI.
Pretty much all reviews tend to agree so far, Hyundai has done a pretty damn good job.
So I picked it up around noon and basically spent the rest of the day driving with some friends since I needed to break in the engine. One thousand kilometers keeping it under 3000 RPM. If you’ve seen any videos about this car or the Veloster N, you might know the sound it can produce. It mostly does this above 3000 RPM. Needless to say I failed a few times at keeping it below 3000.
Anyway, some pics of today. More detailed write up coming in the near future.

I’ve seen a few of these in recent ‘Ring videos, looks like they might have a little hit on their hands.

Nevermind “for a Hyundai,” that’s just a damn good-looking car full stop. Congrats!

It is seriously good looking in the red and black combo like this, I’m now totally convinced this is the best color for the car.

They seem to be getting a lot of media now and according to Hyundai they are seeing a lot of success. But in Estonia I seem to have the only one so far. Dealer said they hadn’t sold any yet before mine and as far as they know it’s the only one in the country that’s not a demo car. Small country, small population, they are basically the main Hyundai dealer so I tend to believe them. Makes me feel kinda special, haha.

The Veloster is not for me but since it will be on the same platform it should be a blast anyway. I just prefer this form factor. Go test drive one if they become available, and let loose some pops and bangs to put a dumb smile on your face :D.

All I can say is that I was on a field trip with my students last week and an i30 N drove by slowly and carefully (because students) and I got my first chance to look at one in the wild and also listen to it. And I have to say that I like it! You instantly notice that it’s not your usual compact shopping cart without looking all over the top like the Civic. Same about the exhaust note. It’s not exactly shy about having a powerful engine, but it won’t make your neighbours hate you.
No idea what it is like to drive, but this single encounter made me put it into my “wouldn’t shove it out of my bed garage” list. And that list is quite short, so that’s an accomplishment.
I also think that you did well choosing red over that blue-ish whatever.
Congrats!

I’d love to have the i30N in the rally blue that they use in the WRC with that red accent on the front lip.
Yours looks great, enjoy it! It’s probably not that bad to dip a bit over 3000 RPM if it’s all warmed up...

Yeah, depending on what mode the car was in the exhaust is pretty civilized while still a bit louder than your average 4-cylinder. In Sport+ mode it can be downright evil sounding and will turn heads for sure. You should go check it out if there’s a dealer with one nearby, just to see if the driving matches up to the criteria for your list ;).
The Performance Blue color seemed awesome at first but the novelty kind of wore off for me. It’s of course subjective but from the colonies available (white, black, grey metallic, that baby blue, the greenish white called clean slate, and red) this Engine Red is just the only option in my book now.

Yeah, I was into that Performance Blue color at first as well, but the novelty kind of wore off after a month or so of seeing them in pictures and videos. For me Engine Red is the color to get, followed by Micron Grey.
It’s probably a “cover your ass” thing with the breaking in the engine, but I’ll still try to stick to it mostly.

We don’t get the i30N so if we want this platform, we gotta get a Veloster.

Pretty, pretty rad.
Kinda bummed we only get the veloster stateside. The i30 looks nicer and is probably more practical.
