On Wednesday, the 13th of June a Polish Road Traffic Inspector patrol stopped a suspicious looking Iveco box van near the city of Dbica. Upon inspection, they discovered a massive load of cauliflowers and bananas inside the Romanian registered truck and ordered it to be weighed. After barely making it onto the scales, the vehicle weighed in at 12 300 kg (~27 115 lbs.), with 10 200 kg (~22 490 lbs.) burdening just the rear axle on a box van rated for 3 500 kg (~7 715 lbs.) GVW.

The Romanian driver was fined with a 1000 z ticket and his vehicle was impounded.

This feat of irresponsible transport was discovered less than a month after a remarkably colourful convoy of 6 Ukrainian VW LTs was stopped near Rzeszów. Each van was found to be carrying 2 reinforced concrete well rings, weighing in at about 10 000 kg total.

The aged LT vans (again, rated for 3 500 kg GVW) were found to be too overloaded to make it up the hill to reach the scales.

I can only imagine the VW drivers were ordered to never use the brakes ever ever.

No way that van weighs less than 3500kg, even unloaded. Do you mean 3500kg payload rating? GVW includes the weight of the vehicle itself.

Nope, it’s not atypical to have this sort of box van registered at 3 500 kg GFV, it definitely weighs less than that. The issue is that for vehicles registered at above 3 500 kg GVW you need a category C license, a tachograph, pay higher tolls and you have to follow lower speed limits, which is why it’s very common to register vans at 3 500 kg GVW.

This is just an Iveco Daily, which in theory could be registered at up to 6 500 kg GVW in its strongest version, but it’s super common to have them at 3 500. The original source also specifically said that this van was registered for 3 500 kg GVW.

That seems awfully fishy with a dually rear axle, long wheelbase, and what looks like a 16' (~5 meter) box on the back.

My 3/4 ton pickup truck has a ~4000 kg gvw rating, and it is in all dimensions smaller than that van. And it’s not even a dual rear wheel setup.

Rated at 3,500 kg so you can drive it on a car licence. Anything over that and you’re on a Class C so about another test and lessons.

... lessons and test that easily cost dozens of hours of driving with a licensed instructor and a 4 digit sum.

The colors display the color of the formerly white underpants of the drivers. The first one was the bravest one.

They can. I’ve heard of people passing after four four-hour lessons though.

Shamefully those did not have your re-enforced suspension components.

Madness. How did they even get the VW LT’s going with so much weight inside?
