I loaned my truck to a friend earlier this year when all of his and his wife’s vehicles had broken down and got it back with an exhaust that was rattling. I was not too concerned about it at the time, and yesterday I finally crawled under it to see if i could determine the source of the noise.
Yep, that’ll do it.... surprisingly, the actual exhaust note isn’t really noticeably any louder. Which just means it’s probably been leaking there for quite some time and just finally completely let go.

I’ve found that at lower RPMs, even complete muffler gone situations, the exhaust isn’t really noticeably louder from inside the cabin. You can tell a difference from outside, and can tell if you really lay into it, but lower-speed lower-rpm driving doesn’t make too much a difference in noise at the driver’s seat.

I think it probably helps that its a wimpy understressed 4cyl engine with a gigantic 30 year old catalytic converter. Because even laying into it, it isn’t very loud.

Depends on the engine. I had a escort zx2 with the standard zetec, pipe rotted away. Not unbearably loud. Then I had an SVT Focus with the Zetec R pipe rotted away in the same spot. Vibrated my ass it was so loud. I actually had it fixed because it was so loud.

I was thinking cheap turbo muffler. The truck just has a 4 cyl iron duke, so it’s not exactly known for it’s agressive exhaust note.

It’s hard to tell from that picture but that gap goes all the way around, and the muffler is not actually directly connected to the rest of the exhaust system anymore. It just freely rotates around the inlet pipe.

just straight pipe it then :) I am just biased for glasspacks, they sound good on everything.
if a mini’s 1 l engine can sound this good, imagine what it can do for a 2.5l

Yeah, not pumping a lot of air definitely helps. My DD is a 2.5 V6 that I had to relocate the muffler and have even driven it without the muffler that has had a broken pipe in several places due to my not having a welder at the time and trying to piece the original system back together at a different angle. A couple of times I’ve been surprised at how loud it was when I opened my door or window. Also, with it mostly lining up with the muffler, it still directs gas through it and quiets it down some. With my truck, a V8, at idle it’s hard to tell, but driving it I had to be at higher RPMs as the power to weight is worse than the car, so it was easier to hear. But I’ve got a glasspack on the truck, so that’s probably why it doesn’t make a whole lot of difference at idle.

From what I can tell, they don’t always sound as nice as a car with a custom “tuned” exhaust, but generally are a safe choice for everything else.

Agreed. I run 8" Cherry Bombs on my ‘67 GTO. People tell me they can hear it half a mile away.
