Its a 2000 M5 that was imported from North Carolina and converted/registered in Canada. The owner upgraded the steering and stereo/nav to add the 2003 bits.

This car looks more promising and the dude is asking $22k CAD. I’m going to get a PPI from a European shop before buying.

I need your help with 3 things -

1. What documents do I need to check to make sure it was registered/converted to be road legal in Canada?

2. What documents do I need from him to make sure he’s the owner and to transfer ownership in Ontario?

3. How do I do the money bit? I haven’t bought a car this expensive. Do I give him a deposit in exchange for a signed title and then exchange the car later with the remaining cash? Any other ideas?

Are you paying cash for it?

I don’t know if there’s another option?

Do people take part cash and do money orders/certified checks? Or does that method of payment give a scammy vibe?

1: It should already have an Ontario title, check for an RIV sticker somewhere on the unibody.

2: Check the title and registration (green slip) to see if the owner and VIN all match up

3: Honestly just pay cash in full if the PPI checks out.

Personally I’d want a certified check. I don’t really think you could finance a car like that. I did write a personal check that size when I bought my M3, but that was to the dealer.

I was just kind of surprised you had that much in cash. From some of your other posts it didn’t seem like you had those kinds of funds at your disposal, asking about a cheap M5 with a shit ton of miles on it, another post saying you were wanting to spend around 7k.

I see, that makes sense. The reason I’m ok with spending a little more now is because I’ve been a good little saver lol

I’d only spend the money if it’s an M5 in good shape. I saw the $14k M5 and realized it’s not worth trying to save on an old German sedan.

But if it were any other car, I don’t want to spend that much.

That’s fair enough. If the M5 is what you really want, it’s a good idea to spend more up front. Shit ain’t cheap to fix.
