I’m such a nerd. I bought this USB dongle for a completely different purpose, not meaning to get into SDR (software defined radio) just yet. It didn’t strike me as to what I had until I found that I was installing some software on another computer, not the one where the hardware was installed. In the process I killed the connection to my wireless keyboard, but that was an easy fix. Now I have a fully functional RTL-SDR setup on my desktop computer. The antenna that came with the receiver sucks (the only way to get a decent signal is to hold it and make myself the antenna), so I’ll have to mess around with that.
I’ve got enough to do these days and I’ve just created another time suck...

This, right here, this waterfall plot? This, literally, is my jam. Like, for the last 20 years. What unit did you get? Anything you want to know? I can design you some waveforms to jam your neighbor’s wifi if you want....

Waterfall plot? I haven’t heard that term, but given what it does I would say that this is an accurate description. I’m still figuring it out, but I’m glad to know who I can reach out to when the inevitable questions arise. The unit is nothing fancy, just a cheap $7 eBay item and some software downloaded off the web somewhere:
The antenna connection is a little unusual, at least in my shop, so I’ll have to find some way to change this to a BNC, PL-259, F-59 or something else that matches my various antennas. I do have a desktop HD radio that has a similar connector, so perhaps I can kill two birds with one stone once I figure this one out.
I don’t know what I’m going to do with this but I would like to see if I can tune into local airports or trains, or maybe even the radio system at my office. In the meantime it makes a decent FM radio.

That looks like fun, though!
