I have a rule for evaluating a band’s greatness. I call it “The Clash rule.”

According to this rule, a band if great if their live recordings of their songs are 1) different from the studio recording. 2) As good, if not better, than the studio recording.

The Who, by this rule a great band (okay, duh)

Possibly also Hawkwind?

Apologies for the crummy transfer on AQO. The good ones have been zorched off Youtube.

Fun fact: The Who headlined with The Clash at their Shea Stadium concert.

I’ll give you a star, but I’m a boring person that likes their album cuts.

The Smashing Pumpkins. I never liked anything from Adore until I heard this.

Here’s a surprise contender for great live band: Blue Oyster Cult (Veteran of the Psychic Wars):

The drummer looks like he wanted to be in Judas Priest but mis-understood their fashion requirements, and had to settle for this gig as a second choice.

I agree, but I would say that almost every major release live version beats the original by an order of magnitude

Central Park Concert version of Watchtower and What you Are.

Just wow.

Plus almost every Dancing Nancies, Ants Marching, Jimi Thing since the mid 90s

Wasn’t that the first of their six ‘farewell’ tours? So far.

Dave and Tim Reynolds = Yes

Dave and the Band = No, stick to the CD’s.

I’m totally with you. Live is garbage.

However, I agree with the premise: If it actually sounds good live and distinctly different from the studio version, the band is great.

The track mixing is always garbage, the live singing is off-key, and they always have ridiculously long bridges in the middle that don’t actually fit with he rest of the song.

My rule is: A song is truly great if you can cover it in a completely different genre and it still sounds good.

I totally agree. However, if they’re good, they can usually work around it to some extent.

There are a lot of bands that are just noise live...

For your consideration: Motorhead!

To be fair they’re a band that try to make records that sound like their live shows not the other way around...

The Talking Heads meet your criteria.

Check out their show in Italy in like 1980. A truly amazing spectacle to behold.
