So, um, Black Panther (spoilers, I guess)

Yeah, I’m coming late to the party but just never had a chance to see it before now. I enjoyed the movie, thought it was very entertaining, but at the end of the day I don’t understand why it got so much love for the writing and story/screenplay (apart from the undeniable cultural significance of the movie). Pretty derivative plot — indeed, it very much reminded me of The Dark Knight Rises. Bad ass bad guy comes to town specifically to destroy the hero, there’s a big fight and the hero gets his ass kicked, the hero gets tossed down a well/waterfall, the hero recovers so he can go back to save everyone, one of the hero’s “friends” switches sides (Miranda Tate, W’Kabi), there’s a big fight where a character who previously wouldn’t get involved decides to do so (Matthew Modine’s character, M’Baku), there’s female sidekicks (Catwoman, Nakia et al.), and the hero ultimately saves the day. You also have a similar underlying theme/question shared between Black Panther and the Batman movies of what should the wealthy/privileged do to help the poor/non-privileged. Would definitely watch again, though.

Comparing a Marvel flick to a DC plot? Isn’t them fightin’ words?

I never had any urge to see this movie, and now I have even less.

I was unimpressed after watching it, generic plot in a new visual setting.

Funny you should say that, as I was just thinking Dr Strange had quite a few Batman Begins tropes. Just... Less interesting

It got a lot of praise because it’s the first time that comic got its big screen debut, could’ve been easy to fuck it up. Also the CGI was on point seeing as his entire suit was CGI the entire time. Also the fact that it was a mostly all black cast in a blockbuster film was huge.

Yes, the cultural significance of the movie was huge. That’s why I specifically called out the writing/plot, which received near unanimous praise. I was watching it thinking its screenplay was just duped from DKR. It’s definitely a well acted, entertaining flick, but the base story certainly was nothing new.

That’s literally all Marvel (and superhero origin) movies though ...

Eh with comic book movies I give them a pass. Almost all of them revolve around the same central themes whether it’s Batman or Antman, it’s tough to take comic movies in a new direction without the fan base getting all riled up.

Yes but this movie was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread, and in these movies I expect the visuals to make up for the generic plot. To me futuristic tech that looks ancient is not interesting and there’s zero twist/ almost no humor.

I put it on par with Antman. Both are good and tell the back story well. Antman was funnier though.

Oh, no doubt. Never drink the Marvel Kool-Aid. Pretty pictures recycled plot.

I really enjoyed the plot of Black Panther in particular. I was expecting a standard superhero film plot, where some laughably evil bad guy gets defeated by our lovable heros, but it was much more interesting than that. Killmonger is a really compelling character, because he has this connection to T’Challa from being so deeply affected by Wakanda. You understand where Killmonger is coming from even if you think he takes it too far, and he honestly has some good points that instill some self-reflection and growth in T’Challa. I thought it had a satisfying dialectic structure, much better structure than any other MCU-universe film I’ve seen which are mostly fun hangout explosion fests IMO.
