I’ve been asked by a family friend to help sell some vehicles out of his parents’ estate. I don’t think there is anything too valuable, but there are a couple interesting vehicles, including a ‘77 Celica GT coupe (two owner, current since 1984, garaged, and with an older interior resto and paint job) and a ‘59 Rambler 6 sedan with a nice patina. The other cars are a bit less interesting and will probably end up on Craig’s List.

Is BaT worth the expense? Any other suggestions?

Depending on how you list on eBay, it can be free unless you sell the vehicle. Then it is based on the value of the sale.

BaT has a fee to list and a barrier of being ‘cool’ enough for them. They don’t let anyone list on their site. They also recommend a reserve and if you disagree they deny you. Ask me how I know.

Craigslist is free. Depending on where you list it will only reach so many people in the nearby areas. Unless they use searchtempest or similar.

I wish I could buy that Celica outright. I love the look of that generation.

(course... im not sure you do shit that way in the states... but it works remarkably well over here in europeland.... local buyers n all )

I love BAT, but it’s probably better for older German cars than anything else. The Celica might do okay there, but I would expect them to pass on the Rambler entirely, and old American iron is very hit or miss there.

Both of those cars have some passionate followers - try a Rambler / Toyota club, and maybe Autotrader Classics?

Seems like Ebay has a lot of sales fall through from what I hear.

And I would not use Craigslist for these cars - you need broader geography to find someone who REALLY wants one of these.

Very cool cars btw - good luck!

In that condition, I’m not sure they would be BaT accepted.

Which shows how much a site that literally tells you to bring a trailer in its name has changed. Maybe barnfinds.com would be a better choice.

Your best bet is probably a combo of EBay, CL, and Autotrader Classic- plus possibly classiccars.com or even a local auction house.

That being said...lemme know when the Celica gets cleaned up ;)

I sold my ‘87 911 on BAT and overall it was a good experience. I tried selling the 911 on eBay, but got trolled by a shill bidder and that’s why I went BAT. On BAT, you will get an honest assessment, but they will pick the car apart if warranted. If your friends aren’t emotionally attached, they might consider a no reserve auction. The peanut gallery can’t complain about no reserve. They also supply you with a liaison to help with the write up and you can interact with the bidders which is nice. Also the seller fees are a lot lower these days.

In the past eBay has worked well for me and you really control the auction (unless a Russian troll hits the buy-it-now and ties you up for a week).

I tried to sell my’78 Fiat Spider on BAT, but they rejected it. They won’t take just anything. I wound up up selling the Fiat on eBay. The trolls don’t care about old Fiats.

I know 0 about their auctions but barnfinds.com might take the Celica and/or Rambler. This is their criteria:

Here are some of the things we like to focus on:Large collectionsUnrestored collector carsLow-mileage survivorsAffordable projectsOddballs and raritiesAnything still in a barnRead more at https://barnfinds.com/sell/#IMExfotoTFeFvI6X.99

I can see that being the case with the Rambler, but the Celica is in really good shape. I couldn’t get a good pic because of the room in the garage and where the sun was in relation to the door.

I was unaware (or forgot about) barnfinds.com. Interesting site and I think the Rambler would be a good fit there. I have a feeling with getting the Celica running and getting it out for some good pictures it would be a good candidate for BaT.

Edit: I thought you where referring to leaving the car in the parking lot. Not a message board.

How much for the Celica?

True, they do feature project or barn finds once in a while, but they tend to go for quite a bit less.

I don’t mean it to defer you from it. Granted I think those Celica’s aren’t quite as desirable yet, I think the Celica may be a good buff away from being presentable.

Don’t know yet. We need to figure out what it needs to run and drive again after sitting in this garage for three years.

Or even less than that. The lighting was about as bad as it could be to take a picture. A wash, an airing out, and some fuel system work should be all it needs.

The somewhat crusty first gen RX-7 and ‘79 Pontiac Grand Prix, and the ‘91 Country Squire wagon are Craig’s List bound.
