Mine really is a shitbox. The air quality sensor doesn’t work so it forces me to smell the outside air.

Is it that bad? I think I use interior recirc about 3-4 times a year.

Has the car generally been a PITA? I really like them, but I’m not stubborn. I can deal with minor stuff like that if the electrics and drivetrain are reasonably sound.

I was kidding. It’s just a sensor that’s supposed to send the climate control into recirculate automatically when the outside air is “dirty”. It’s really not, and they aren’t in general. The ones that are on their 5th owner and went through someone that wanted it to race STis and EVOs are the ones that people see and start making generalizations. All the work that mine has needed is no different than any other car with nearly 170,000 miles. Suspension, steering, brakes, fluids, and tune-up stuff.

Awesome, sorry I missed the joke ;)

So no turbo issues? Adjustable suspension, etc? I’m coming from VW/Audi so nothing really shocks me and I’m used to doing a wee bit more maintenance than average.

I have a neighbor who is a first owner and I’m seriously thinking about knocking on his door to see if he wants to sell.

I like to play along with the jokes and then try to show people that it’s not actually as bad as the internet would lead you to believe.

The turbo is original and has no noticeable shaft play. It’s pretty easy to get the intake pipe off to check. My 4C struts are original and still function. I’m sure they could use a replacement. Most people say they’re done around 100k. I think it just depends on how often people ride around in Sport or Advanced and how bad your roads are. Visually it’s easy to check for leaking oil. Driving - Just find a non-perfect road and each setting should be noticeably different. Throttle response in Advanced should be like a light switch while Comfort is like a puffy cloud.

I test drove a brand new 2004 with 6MT back in the day when the dealer looked at me like “are you sure you’re supposed to be here?”

I love fielding questions about reliability in my 2001 Passat wagon...it’s sort of ironic because if the car was really that unreliable, would I really still be driving my kids around it it? Do I look like I couldn’t go get something slightly newer and nicer that I’m “stuck” driving a 17-year-old Audi-based VW worth about $1,500?

I’m cheap and I like it!

Cheap person here too! I low balled for both my Volvos and wouldn’t have touched either if I wasn’t prepared to do all the work myself. I like that generation of Passat. It’s an honest and smart design style that isn’t screaming look at me, to only look like crap in a few years.

Yeah, I look at it sometimes and wonder if it’s worth fully rehabbing it for the aesthetics alone. I mean, this is right now, half-assing it — parked outside, hasn’t been waxed in 2 years and burning up in the sun. But there’s just too much little stuff to fix to make it a long term keeper (it shares 90% of its parts and complexity with the A4 and some with the C5 Audi A6/Allroad). Only 125k miles though.

I love that Porsche green. Tan leather interior, fully loaded, V6, mechanical AWD.
