Right, then...
So, I’ve learned that Outbacks lend themselves to mods, somewhat. I’m not looking to get into lift kits, brush bars and lights so much, but I am looking at new wheels. But I’m wrestling with left brain logic and right brain emotion.
Mind you, I don’t need new wheels. I do need new tires eventually, as the stock ones aren’t all that great and are approaching end of life. I can get better tires for the 18’s, but a lot of folks switch to a 17 (apparently a better ride and more air down capability). I’m looking at Method 501’s, but...it would be largely a cosmetic change...and I feel silly buying $800 worth of wheels largely just for looks (there’ll be some soft reading, but >99% of the time, it’s pavement).
Is this just something that’s done for no good reason? Because I have none...I just want to..

I thought that “ I just want to” was the reason for almost all modification.

I can usually stop myself if “I just want to,” but if there’s an additional push then it’s all over. e.g. worn tires -> hey I need wheels anyway -> etc etc.

Smaller wheel + more sidewall does have the benefit of the tire better protecting the wheel from curbs and potholes. Honestly, the 18" wheels and ultra low profile tires are kind of silly for day to day use.

Simple!
First, they look better, and Method’s are AWESOME!
Second, Subaru Rally America runs them, so because racecar.
Third, tires for 17" wheels are cheaper, so really, you’re saving money.
VonBootWilly - Likes Toyota, but it's still complicated.

I bought some Motegi MR139 17's recently. Fwiw, they were really well built and finished with a really tough coating. I want to paint them silver to look more like the Team Dynamics Pro Rally 1 wheels they basically directly copied.

17" tires are less money, so you should buy new wheels in the i nterest of saving money. It would be irresponsible not to.

I have an Outback and when I get the money I am also planning on getting wheels from Method. God they look awesome!
