Howdy folks,
I wanna fetch some river rock; my Taco can handle 1100 pounds but how do you figure out what the rock weighs? My truck bed is 5' long, can I fill the entire bed with rock? Thanks!

It depends on the type of rock

Grab a couple rocks that fit a defined area average the weight then you have an average weight per sqft then figure out how much sqft to get to 1100 lbs ;)

Your Taco can handle 1100 lbs minus the weight of the driver and passengers. This should help you figure out what a load of rocks weighs

So no, loading a Tacoma’s bed with rocks is a Very Bad Idea.

Unconsolidated fill like gravel generally weighs about 120-130 lbs per cubic foot so about 9 cubic feet would get you to 1100 lbs or 1/3 of a cubic yard or not much at all.

I heard you can carry more if you only drive 55.

Three years ago we laid in a brick patio. I put 800 lbs of gravel and 1900 lbs of sand in that patio, carried from the next town over in my ‘05 Tacoma in 3 trips. On one of those trips, it carried 1100 lbs of sand. It rode quite low in the back.
I can’t really say how I figured out how much was enough...I just had the guy pour from the scoop until I said, “Okay!” I got pretty good at hitting 800 lbs though.

I’d be more worried about how you are getting them in and out. If it’s a front loader your truck sides are going to get beat.
Keep in mind it’s a composite box as well- you don’t want to be dropping rocks from 10 feet up..

You can put as much in there as you want, unless you want to know how much rock you can get and still be under 1100 lbs payload.
They’ll sell it to you in cubic feet or yards. Here is a good place to start

Don’t worry about it fitting, you’ll run out of payload long before you run out of room

There are alternatives to loading your Taco’s bed full of rock.
I don’t have a payload capacity for my little trailer, but I know it will hold two scoops! That’s right at the max towing load for the Outback. It would be easy for your Taco.

Volume won’t be your limiting factor; you’ll run out of payload capacity way before you’ll run out of space. When I did gravel/rock/crusher fines in bulk for landscaping at the old house, I found that paying the $65 delivery fee for each load was worth every penny. Unloading gravel/rock from the the bed of a truck would’ve been even more work. I would’ve paid several hundred dollars for a delivery fee and still felt like it was money well spent.
I’ve you’ve got to do it yourself, renting a 6x12 open trailer from Uhaul will get you a lot more payload capacity than the back of your truck.

Well... Passengers. Driver is already included in the payload figure

Pea gravel is very heavy. I’ve overloaded my Tacoma multiple times, 1,800 pounds is the most I’ve done and it hasn’t given me problems. Loading your entire bed with that will probably be over 2,000.

Unless the driver is extra fat. The owners manual will tell you if your fat.

I usually count the people tied up in the bed separately, but you’re correct.

This is extra fun when your motorcycle tells you not to ride it because you’re too fat.

Better off renting a dump trailer, I’d rather tow over capacity than carry a load over capacity...

Agree, I gladly pay the $50 delivery charge and have them bring the little dump truck rather than trying to load my Tacoma.
We’ve done 5, 3, 2 , and another 2 yards of 3/4 crush into our yard over the last few years and another 2 yards of mulch. It’s bad enough taking it from the driveway back to the the yard- I would hate to load and unload it again before the work really started.

looks like you can fit all of the rocks in the bed no problem look the suspension doesnt even sag one bit
