I’m the one using mostly complete sentences.

Hmm.. Well, maybe he doesn’t want to tell you. What he does in his off-time isn’t really your business. He did kind of invite that question with his response. He should of said, “yeah, oh well I got a lot of personal stuff/errands/etc done, so that was nice”

If he was supposed to be working, I would suggest nipping that in the bud ASAP.
That shit is contagious, and other employees will catch it if you don’t treat it quickly.

I don’t see anything wrong with him showing eagerness. He’s on what; day rate? Hourly wage? Assuming you work outdoors (as do I), then if the weather is clear he was probably expecting to go and earn some monies. Agreed there’s no need for cross-questioning, but I’m guessing he’s young and soon pick up the ropes.

He’s on hourly, but I set the hours depending on the job. It was raining a bit today, but I told him our crew would not be working today because I had to go into my actual job and I don’t trust him to not fuck shit up. He isn’t allowed to give estimates on anything anymore because of his lack of attention to detail and I hate actually showing up to the job and finding about 10 things that weren’t mentioned on the estimate sheet.

I appreciate that. How long has he been with you? I design and build gardens and I have a worker who is punctual, great with customers, a solid worker - but ask him to think on his feet or do something that isn’t on the original design, it all goes to shit. He’s been with us for coming up three years now, and his lack of logistical problem solving and inability to learn is just what it is. He has other qualities and I focus him on what he does well. As this is seemingly a second venture for you, alongside your actual job, can I assume you wouldn’t consider hiring an apprentice?

This is why subordinates shouldn’t text their superiors unless it’s strictly business.

Probably a good idea, I’m new to this business ownership thing if you couldn’t tell haha.

Yeah I didn’t mean to specifically say you, just in general.
But you’re also not in California, so it’s probably okay to go drinking and clubbing with them. ImmoralMinority and I had a discussion about this at lunch. He’s an actual business owner, I’m just an employee, but we both shuddered at the thought.

About a week. He’s good with talking to customers, which is his only good quality. He sucks at giving quotes and is the slowest, most inaccurate worker besides that. We do patio construction and design, my business partner managers the financial side of things as well as advertising. I manage the actual design process because I’m experienced with the software we use, as well as leading the construction efforts. My main problem is that since I have a 9-5 job, I’m having trouble making sure my labor knows what they are doing. I don’t think I have enough time for an apprentice yet, I’m planning on selling my share in the next couple years as I go into a different career.

Gotcha, then I think you set future expectations. It’s none of his business.

He’s hopefully got the point by now, that’s what kinda sucks about hiring somebody the same age as you. They kinda think they’re on the same level constantly.

Yeah, I mean at least it seems like he wants to work.
He could be calling out 2 out of 5 days you do work. I’ve found almost no one has the same work ethic, level of ambition, or personal skills as you do. We’re all different, with different strengths and weaknesses. With age, your ability to read people gets better and better.

I once had a warehouse worker tell me he “didn’t want to be known as the guy who sweeps the floors around here” when I asked him to do so. Keep in mind that if he doesn’t do it then I, the owner of the company, have to do it (and have done it for years before hiring a warehouse worker).
He’s no longer employed by me, and I’ve given up on warehouse workers after going through three in 18 months.

I get that a lot in my personal life. I’m 41 and single, so there are people who seem to think that if I’m not at work I couldn’t possibly have anything more worthwhile to do than what they need me for.
but yeah, I’d have handled it the same way. none of your f***ing business what I’m doing, if it doesn’t involve you.

Is he your only labourer ? It sounds like you need a foreman. If you’re not able to be on site to oversee his quality of work and keep him in the right direction, then you need someone to come in who can keep everything on the straight and narrow.
I need a foreman. I can’t find one who finishes work to the standards that I require for my customers, no matter how much I pay. So I built a fold-out office in the back of my Land Rover. All I needed was £40 of materials, a 12V laptop charger, portable WiFi, and a bluetooth speaker. I feel invincible back there. I can be on site to keep a quiet eye on things, I can do about 75% of the office/design work I need to do, and I’m there for the customer when they inevitably change their mind about something.
What I’m saying is influence what you can influence. If someone isn’t up to scratch - you’ve shown them what you require from them, given them ample opportunity to practice, and they are still unable or unwilling to do it - then cut the chaff. Get someone in who at least has experience in what you need. Pay them more, get faster and better results. Quicker turn-around. More profit.
In my case it was; I need to be full-time design and admin, no foreman to replace me = better take my office to work then.
Sorry if this sounds a bit preachy. Just been there done that, t-shirt and whatnot.

I mean, I’d like to. But I’m going into the Military in two months and I don’t want to allocate any resources to this business until then.
Nice setup though!

I love meeting potential psychopaths in person, I’ve had great luck so far.
I was even brave enough to meet, and race, a Miata owner. But I did bring my friend as backup in case things went south.
