Isn’t a properly sized tire supposed to afford the rim a wee bit of protection against curb rash?

That just doesn’t look right... Also, seriously, stop ramming into curbs?

Is stretch back in fashion? This is like training wheels for that.

It depends on the tire and the wheel. My wheels stick out beyond the protective ring on my tires, plus they’re really not that useful because the sidewall deflects and the rings are soft.

These tires don’t have much wheel overhang at all (if any).

The contis on my Renault have a flared bit of rubber around the edge of the rim to stop curb rash. Luckily I haven’t had to try it out. Those tyres look to be similar but just not wide enough for the wheels.

The lip may protect a bit, but those tires are stretched a bit so not really helping at all.

I think the tires here are all the same size, but the Beamer has wider rims on the back. It’s a stupid setup.

I think of the tires as maybe helping if you accidentally brush the curb when you are parking. This clown looks like he parks at ramming speed.

My thoughts also. Probably a deal price on a set of tires and the shop said, “They’ll fit,” and the owner said, “Cool.”

lol, so they got staggered rims but not tires. Good job all around, both the owner and the tire shop. WTF

Some shop slapped on some tires. The owner had zero clue, is my guess.

But sometimes I see factory setups that are stretched like that?

Can’t say I’ve ever “brushed” a curb. I usually just drive over it. ;)

No doubt, I’m not saying it’s wrong, but without the tread being wider, the sidewall won’t protect as well as a tire that has the wider tread.

You could very well be right on that: I’m picturing someone getting a flat, and having it towed to the nearest Tirez R US where they said, “our policy is you have to replace all four” and this is the result.

that is interesting - the tread pattern isn’t even as wide as the rim is. I wonder if they put a skinnier tire on?

Same here. That ‘76 Lambo has 70s on it. I think 70 is the best profile. My ‘97 Safari van has 65s and that still has a pretty good sidewall.

60s for a car. 70+ for trucks/vans.

Those are about my optimal numbers.

Yup. My old van, Rusty, will have/has 15-inch 70s. I want some sidewall, but I also don’t want anything too wide.

My car will end up with 50s, which is less than I would prefer, but they look great with SRT4 wheels, so I will cave this once and deal with the less than ideal ride.

Curb feelers! I gave away my last set to a young lady visiting my daughter from the UK. She said that the curb heights varied so much, that my old set of feelers would be a real help in parking.
Then I couldn’t find any replacements!

Curb rash: cancer of the testicles for tire stretchers.
Can be fixed, but at a price . . .

They are 17s.

I can manage 205/50s or 215/45s for tires.

I guess it’s called “staggered” when the rear rims are wider than the front rims. I learnt that in this thread.

I honestly think the owner of that car is ignorant of what he or she owns. I think folks buy cars with no thought to the $3,000 front brake job, or the $500 tires that are on it when they drive it home. A fool and his money...

Other than for looks, why are manufacturers making larger diameter rims?

I think the idea is that a lower profile tire provides better handling. I like a big wheel but it gets to a point where it’s ridiculous. I have 275/65r18 tires on my F-150 and that’s pretty much perfect for me.

And perhaps suspensions and lighter GVW help as well and obviate the need for a taller sidewall. Just speculating here...
