For those curious, a simplified story/continuity chart:
3 is its own movie and doesn’t fit in here, and the Rob Zombie films are their own thing.
I’m so excited!

Yes, III was its own thing. I’m sure they only attached the Halloween name to it to boost returns.
But why excited? After a while, doesn’t it get boring when you know that whatever happens, it all means nothing? Michael will survive to kill again in another movie.

Actually - John and Debra intended to do a Halloween anthology type series with a different story/movie every year after Halloween 2, when Season of the Witch tanked, they stepped away and other producers continued the story of Michael Myers in their own way. John and Debra, obviously, were contractually still attached as producers. I just don’t think that it was clear to the public what their plan was going forward from 2.
I’m excited because I love horror films, and Halloween is my favorite franchise. Plus, Jamie Lee Curtis is back! Again!

I love Jamie Lee Curtis. Bringing her back is what makes this interesting at all. I just have a beef with all horror movies that bring back the monster forever ad nauseam, regardless of the implausibility, to keep a franchise going and make a buck. What makes a story work is when actions have consequences and plots work within established rules. In the Halloween stories (or Jason movies, or whatever), guns and knives and blunt objects kill people just like you expect them to. That’s how all the victims buy it. But not the monster. You can shoot or stab him all you want or run over him with a train. It doesn’t matter. The rules don’t apply to him. Argggg!
That’s why, as much as I hated killing Han Solo, he now needs to stay dead. It’s also why, even though it brings up intriguing story possibilities, it was stupid to bring back Darth Maul. Once people are killed within the rules of the game, they need to stay dead.
Thank you for indulging this rant. We now return you to your regularly scheduled shitposting.

Oddly, horror movies are the one genre I’ve never been able to look at with a rational mind, in that manner. I’ve always just had a natural suspension of belief when it comes to them (I feel it’s kind of necessary). Sure, there are times where I’ll think, “wtf?” or “that’s just not how that would work” or what have you - but in general I just don’t naturally have a rational process of belief/reality when it comes to them. To be fair, horror movies were really the first genre I watched and enjoyed with any regularity as a kid so maybe I’ve just become immune to the absurdity of them.
That’s not to say, though, that I like endless absurd sequels *
ahem* Friday the 13th *ahem*
or that I think every horror movie is good - but I’ll definitely give them a shot to see if I enjoy them or not and go in with no preconceived notions.

I think you’re doing it the right way then to get your money’s worth.
I’m okay with whatever, as long as it fits with the internally established rules. I thought the original Nightmare on Elm Street was a masterpiece when I saw it in the theater. Does all that dream-reality crossover shit seem plausible in the light of day? Of course not. But internally it did. So, I was cool with it. The only part that bugged me was the last few seconds when everyone who was killed is suddenly okay, and Freddy suddenly pops in at the end with a “gotcha” that was not explained and made no sense to the plot. It was just standard horror movie bullshit.

That ending has spawned a lot of theories and speculation over the years, understandably.
New Nightmare
is arguably the masterpiece of that cannon. Absurdly unbelievable, yes, but perhaps the best of them all.

I enjoyed that movie when I saw it because it was a clever twist on a horror movie franchise. Some of it was wacky and not terribly scary, but props from me for making the effort.

Agreed, can’t say I found it even slightly jump worthy, but it was a great twist.
