Been looking for a gizmo I can use to sharpen or repair broken drill bits. I’ve seen drill doctor, but I am confused if that is what I want.

Anyone have any experience or anything they recommend

I use an older model, but it’s amazing. It’s awesome but not cheap. https://www.darex.com/

I only buy shitty drill bits, they break before they go dull.

Honestly I wouldn’t even bother. Around Christmas every year Lowes has huge drill bit/driver sets for $12.99. Just get a new set every year or 2.

Me too. I break drill bits aplenty, but they aren’t worth saving.

Even better. Bits can’t get dull if you can’t use them.

Yeah, that’s been my tactic. Cheaper to replace than to repair.

I mean if you have the time and know how to sharpen them with a file okay, but I would not buy a $130 sharpener

The drill doctor works great. I have one. I’d use it more often but harbor freight drill bits are so cheap I feel silly sharpening them. I mostly use it when i’m in the middle of a job and the bit goes dull, and I’ve already dulled/broken the 3 extras I had, and you can’t substitute a bigger/smaller size, and you know if you don’t finish it right now you probably never will.

Yeah if I didn’t work where I am I definitely would not buy one unless I could get one at auction.

Can’t speak to the sharpener, but I do have a kind of rule with my drill bits. I have a cheap set that I use for most things, when one breaks or gets really dull, I’ll either replace the one or get a new cheap set, depending on how many are dull/broken.

Then I have a full index of really nice bits by 64ths that I only use sparingly, but man, they’re sharp when you need them to be. If one of those breaks, I’ll replace it individually with the same kind. Nothing crazy, but I think they’re Irwin titanium or something? Can’t recall off the top of my head. In my toolbox, they’re not even in the same drawer as all the other drill bits, though. I have to really want to use one, and if anyone else goes into the toolbox, they won’t find “the good ones.”

haha nice. Yeah. I’ve come to a conclusion that sharpening drill bits it not worth the effort. Good s harpeners cost thousands and i have no idea how often I would use it. I was just hoping to make drill bits usable again after you snap one’s tip off. I gather not since most are specially tipped like your kryptonite tipped bits. Once the business end comes off, it’s a nail with grooves.

Ah yes, kryptonite. That’s what it was. Man, it took light years for them to arrive in the mail. And instead of coming the usual way, they just fell out of the sky and cratered into my lawn one day. How could I have forgotten about that?
