I couldn’t believe this when I saw it at my desk. We need to stop being close-minded and turning a blind eye. We need to be open and empathetic about depression and mental illness and help everyone and anyone within our reach whom we care about that struggles with it every day. Even individuals perceived to be well off with the best jobs in the world and money and materials, might not feel that way...They may be sad inside.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This is depressingly distracting me from work today. My parents and I would watch him travel the world and share cultures and cuisines any time he was on the Travel Channel. He was an integral part of my TV-time and childhood, offering an unbiased and curious look into parts unknown to me and will be sorely missed.

Yes her as well. Another high-profile tragic suicide in the same week. Life can be sad no matter how much money and family you’ve got.

Call your reps. Seriously. Not too make this a political deal here, but honestly your reps, especially GOP reps need to hear all of us make it a voting point right now. The GOP has steadily reduced mental health funding over time with each bill and budget. Inattention has caused a lack of dealing with this when anxieties are ramped up by uncertainty which magnifys depressions. When someoneactually goes in search of help and finds roadblocks or wait lines for that help or expensive insurance holes, we get what were seeing. A real measurable increase in suicides.

Tell your reps to wake up.

Tony was the “Lou Reed” of cooking!

I haven’t watched a ton of his shows, but really liked what I have seen. He explored food and cultures without the snootiness of most other travel/food shows IMO. He seemed to really accept and be completely OK with the fact that all good food doesn’t have to be a perfectly cooked duck confit – and the cultural and societal reasons WHY not every culture doesn’t have equally exquisite cuisine.

Even watching one of his episodes about my own country that I spent my entire childhood in before moving to the US I was able to see “another side” of the country/culture/connection with food that I hadn’t seen or appreciated just given his willingness and ability to go anywhere, talk to anyone, eat anything, and appreciate all of that for what it is.

Really a huge loss, I hope we can all do better by each other to protect those around us and make sure they see how valued and needed they are.

Thank you for posting this. His death, unfortunately, matters more than we think around here (Oppositelock). Before the fame, he was just a chef that enjoyed writing. We have a few people around here that fit the type. What happened to him could happen to you, me, or the next person. We should all take a moment and ponder. Why.

Bummed me out. I loved his shows. I always saw him as being much like author PJ O’Rourke , someone who could write or speak in such prose that you could feel like you were one with the experience. Tony made you want to go to that foreign diner and eat with locals. He involved you instead of just recalling his adventures.
