Got my Cannondale all ready to ride! Rode it 20 miles yesterday, and learned enough to make a few adjustments today. I’d say it’s a front wheel tune up from pefect(for a 20 year old bike). This Bike is actually nicer than I thought. Because I don’t know road bike brands, but the gear secretors and brake components are all Dura Ace, the hubs are campagnolo, and rims are Velocity. Only upgrades in mind are a carbon seat post, and saddle. If you’ve got suggestions on those I’d be happy to hear them.
Those stripes on the seat stay are reflective tape. I’ve got a tailight on the way too, and might as some aero bar end mirrors too.

Saddle? If you’re looking for comfort, a Brooks B-17. I also really like WTB. Check out their saddle fit system: https://www.wtb.com/pages/wtb-saddle-fit-system .
If you’re looking for a racing saddle, I’ve got nothing.

That’s an early 90’s bike. I’ve had three cannondales and loved them all. With the amount of seat post you have sticking up there would be very little benefit from a carbon post.

nice - the Shimano Dura Ace stuff, while not top end is still super solid equipment.

The rear shifter has the best *click* into gear I’ve ever felt. Bottom tube shifters aren’t ideal but I can’t complain as I only have like 100 buck in this bike right now

I had an old CAAD 5 like that one, except blue. Thing was stiff as a rock, but a pretty fast sprinter. That aluminum was not forgiving. I would go carbon seatpost if you’re getting fatigued on long rides.

Since when is Dura Ace not top end?

Dude, that’s a grade A machine you’ve got there (especially if this was the late 80s to 90s). Well done!

don’t get me wrong - it’s super nice, (my last bike just had a mix of Ultegra stuff...) but it’s not Campagnolo Record or Super Record level.

I am an avowed Italophile. My ideal bike is a steel Colnago with a Croce A’une gruppo. But in truth, Dura Ace is functionally just as good starting in the 90s, and that’s why it began to overtake Campy in the peloton. It’s indexed shifting was superior, and Campy played catch up for a long time. The thing that always put Campagnolo a cut above for me was the beautiful polished aluminum finish on those gorgeously designed pieces. It sadens me now that everything has given way to carbon fiber, but that’s progress I guess.

agree on the steel - my daily beater at the time was a Trek 930 with bar pegs and road tires, lots more comfortable over distance than stiffer frames. Put thousands of miles on that bike....

And you could put thousands of miles on steel and it would never fatigue. I rode in a time when there were no straight forks on road bikes.

Yeah it’s not the latest or greatest. But it was free, aside from some much needed maintenance

That’s excitly why I was thinking of the carbon seat post. And an BIR more forgiving seat. I find myself lifting off the seat for a lot of bumps, and getting fatigued when my buddy on his carbon bike is fine

Truth. I had seriously thought about spending 700-1000 bucks on a used carbon bike, but this came along for free because my wife’s step Dad got a newer bike. I asked him if he’s sell me his bike and he said he’d give it to me as long as I promised to use it.

Excellent. I thought my Colnago was a deal at $325 when I bought it off someone on the college team. But you win.

I’d skip the carbon seatpost and grab a Brooks Flyer saddle instead.
I’ll grab one for my Poprad one of these days, maybe, if I ever get to ride the damn thing again.

Saddles are a really personal fit and you should find one that fits you well. I’d be hesitant to spend a ton of hours on a poorly fitting saddle.
Dura-Ace components and Campy hubs are/were top of the line for the time. They’re still great components. Be sure to keep the chain and cables lubed well as I’m sure you’re aware. Tri-Flow or ProLink are great chain lubricants. Don’t use a household oil or WD-40.
Take some time to dial in the fit too! Your joints and muscles will appreciate it. https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bike-fit.html

Yeah, obv. the more spendy option is to get a carbon bike. I rode aluminum for years but bought a Fuji SL on huge discount at the end of last summer and man let me tell you what. It is first brand new bike I’v ever owned and also the first carbon bike I’ve ever ridden, and it is night and day to what I used to ride. It is silky smooth, you can really put in the miles and it’s just so comfortable.

My problem with a spring seat is loos of power. I a bit more comfort for long rides but I also want to be able to sprint when I want.

True, but I think the added comfort would offset the performance hit in the long run for recreational riding. A comfortable rider is a happy rider. Plus, since you’ll have to work a bit harder, it’ll mean you’ll be training more effectively, which will make you that much faster if and when you throw a leg over a weight weenie carbon racing rig.
If springs aren’t your thing though, the previously mentioned B17 might be a comfy choice... Once it’s broken in, anyway.
