Got some quotes for carpet installation

I severely miscalculated how much it would cost. We’re talking four total rooms and some stairs (spolier alert: new house has these thing called STAY-URHS). In my head I was like, no goddamn way. Then I did a breakdown of the quote...

“You gotta be — Oh yeah that’s about the same sq ft price you’d find anywhere... But the padding is outrage — Humm, yeah that’s around what people are saying it goes for online... But this labor charge! I mean — No, no, I guess when you break down the man-hours and the going rates for a trade, it’s not a bad deal... Hell, it might even be a little low...”

Oh well. Work hard, make money, light on fire, repeat

How much, if you don’t mind divulging? I haven’t met with the flooring folks yet and I wanna brace myself.

Here was the highest one that I wonder if it’s competitive or not:

- carpet: $23.00 sq yard

- pad: $5.50 per sq yard

- labor: $5.00 per sq yard

Your price quotes are right on, seems pretty fair to me. HD has free installation, I believe, if you trust their installers...

I spent 6 years as a commercial flooring estimator... You can get cheaper pad. The carpet cost is not crazy, builder grade would be about $13. The labor looks pretty normal for residential. If you price laminate or engineered wood you might be surprised to see that the cost is not too crazy, depending on what they hit you with on the labor.

Get a couple estimates, as I am sure you are.

I did our hardwood floors myself and saved a bundle but it was a lot of work.

I actively avoid apartments with built-in carpet. Better without!

I immediately ripped out the carpet when I moved into my house. My allergies are bad enough without it.

That’s actually a bit less than I’ve been bracing for. That’d be a shade less than $8k to carpet the whole house- kitchen bathrooms and all (NO.)!

Here’s what will make you sad: Florida prices. Last year our rental got a new septic drain field for $3,500. That’s a $12,000-ish job in these parts. It also got new carpet in the bedrooms- about 500 sq ft- for $800. Granted, my specifications were “Idunno... something beige and cheap?” so it wasn’t the fanciest carpet, but still.

Stairs, stairs are expensive. Carpeting was the most expensive thing I did to my last house.

I got pre finished 3 1/4" maple for $2.40/sq ft. I did the livingroom/kitchen/dining room for about $1600. I had to do it myself, but it was worth it.

Interesting carpet fact - it is actually better for allergy sufferers as it traps the dust and allergens in the pile as opposed to hard surfaces which allow the allergens to move about freely. The only caveat is that the carpet has to be vacuumed regularly in order to see this benefit.
