TLDR: Pay a total of $28,000 for a bunch of  virtual ships vaporware, since it’s still not released. Seriously, you could buy a new car with that sort of cash.

Video games other than Flight Simulators

They deserve this fate

But Star Citizen is supposedly a flight simulator!

the claims that are being made about Star Citizens “expensive ships” are really quite misleading. paying an egregious amount for a ship has never been about the ship in reality. They are donations to contribute to the game budget. The reward for certain levels of donation is access to the ship as it becomes available and the privilege of owning the ship from the outset of the game, without the grind. Its really just a perk of backing them. I haven’t watched that particular video yet but incase they don’t mention it, all the ships will be available for in game currency upon release.

I will say, however, (as I have told my brother many times). If it ever releases it will be the greatest video game of all time. Until the full release though, I won’t touch it with a ten foot pole.

I’m a Star Citizen backer, and even I’m getting tired of their shenanigans. They’ve clearly pivoted away from the average space game enthusiast and have been targeting whales now. People with more money than sense.

They do say all ships that are purchasable now can be earned in game.

Source: me, backer with more than 1.5k bucks in the horse race over 5 years.

Edit: they have released a decent alpha build that works as a proof of concept. Just didn’t expect old gaming rigs to keep up.

I get that you’re not paying for the ship, you’re helping to pay to get the game made, but when you’ve had 160 million USD donated to your game development over the past 6 years and you’ve yet to show something other than a tech demo, odds are that game is going to continue remaining in in development.

I wish they focused less on new implementing new ships and just finish the game already, but new ships are what brings in the cash, so they work on new ships and the actual game development takes that much longer. :(

Alongside the development they’re building out the lore, system by system, with planet-specific details. Kind of interesting watching some of the lore rundowns on their YT channel, especially as a Halo fan.

Oh I agree, it’s getting to the “this has to be a scam” pout now. And spending that much money to help a game is just dumb. If you have that much extra money to blow, why not buy a needy family a new car, or 3 needy families a decent car. I think that would give me more satisfaction than getting my name in the credits of a video game (if you even get that).
