He was hoping to get the W210 to last 20 years, but it’s eating him alive in repairs and it’s time to go, two years short of his plan. Transmission leaks, malfunctioning ABS/ESP sensors, rear main leak, malfunctioning mirrors, dead CD changer, with most of these problems cropping up in the last few months. He babies that car and it is in drop-dead gorgeous condition, but these continued problems means that it’s got to go. It started out as a bit of a lemon, with a defective steering rack right out of the factory causing it to burn through a set of tires in less than 6K miles. Mom’s hasn’t been a paragon of build quality or reliability either, but at least it’s not disintegrating as fast as his.
His mechanic is actually interested in purchasing it, probably to use as a loaner, so I guess that means he’ll get to drive it again when mom’s W210 wagon is in the shop. I was surprised at how little it’s worth, and he’ll probably get perhaps $2,000 for it given the repairs he currently needs. It’s nothing special, just a bottom-of-the-line E-Class with the V6, so I shouldn’t be surprised by this low valuation.
Since he’s retired and shut down his company he really doesn’t need or want anything expensive and flashy. The two he narrowed it down to are the Prius Prime and Volt LT. Personally, I’m voting for the Volt. I’ve liked these cars since they first came out and would probably buy one myself if I wasn’t a renter. My folks have the advantage of having a little more juice than they need from their solar system, so a plug-in vehicle makes sense for him. Now, does he live with 120V for charging, or flip the unused 220V line for the dryer that’s just on the other side of his spot in the garage? He only drives about 5K/year, so 120V charging should be sufficient.
Although the predicted reliability of the Prius is better because, well, Toyota, I would actually be willing to give GM a chance. The engineering and build quality of the Volt (and Bolt) seem to be better than normal for GM, like they’re actually giving a damn for once. When you look at dad’s car history, he’s made some pretty good choices over the years (GTO, MGC GT, E21, E28, E34, W210) and a questionable one (Mustang II - what on earth was he thinking???). Sure, whatever he chooses is going to be a step down from a Benz, but I think the Volt would be a better driving car than a Prius, and at 73 that still matters to him.
So, any Volt owners out there willing to share their experiences?

I had a 1st gen Volt. Loved it. Plenty of power, great fuel economy, and it was very quiet inside. The only downside for me was the weak A/C. I live in the desert and it could never catch up. The black leather didn’t help. The back seat was a little tight for adults. I used a 20 amp outlet to charge mine. It took all night, but it still charged it. The 2nd gen would probably have problems trying to do a full charge overnight - there’s a lot of heat involved using normal extension cord and I checked it every day to make sure I wasn’t going to melt anything. A 240v line would eliminate any concern. Plus, if I remember correctly, with a simple NEMA 5-15/20 to 14-50 240v pigtail you can use the charger that comes with the car with a 240v line for fast charging without having to spend $$ on a wall-mount version.
Anyway, it comes down to a test drive. I loved how the Volt drove. The 2nd gen is even quieter and I would love to lease one. Three Prius’ in my family and I don’t like any of them. Lots of road noise, poor handling. Even my deaf dad hates how loud their Prius V is at 80mph. Road noise and a whiny, high-strung engine. The Volt is much better in this regard. Haven’t driven the Prius Prime so I’m no help there.
DIY version of the pigtail I mentioned earlier:

Thanks for the info. My folks are in SoCal, close to the coast, so I think the A/C should be sufficient. He doesn’t like black interiors and wants cloth so that’ll probably help as well (although he’ll have tt of get the Convenience Package to avoid the black interior.
Rear seat legroom shouldn’t be much of an issue since it’ll just be the two of them for 99% of the driving. When I go out to visit I’ll make sure they take mom’s car to pick me up.
I haven’t been impressed by any Prius when it comes to driving dynamics. It’s probably just fine for someone that doesn’t give a damn about driving, but dad and I don’t fit into that category.
I’ll mention that adapter. I figure that he and I can do the electrical work when I’m out there on vacation in a few months.

I have a 2013 Volt that I’ve put about 45,000 miles on. I really like it. It’s very quiet inside and drives much better than the Prius C or V I test drove before buying it. I also had issues because the Prius had a very large rear view mirror that basically made the passenger side of the windshield unusable for me.
Mine has a total of 75,000 miles now and has never needed anything but scheduled maintenance.
I have no issues without having a 220v Charger so far. It is an upgrade I plan to make in the future though.

2017 volt with @11k on the odometer.
Plug in: at 12amp I have a full battery every morning.
I liked the prius and the milage numbers were better, but wasn’t crazy for the center touchscreen.
I love how quiet it is in traffic. Back seat is a bit cramped for an adult on long drives. The thing that has taken a bit getting used to is managing heat in the winter(15 to 30F). temps I don’t think in Socal will be applicable.
one slight bonus is the 18.3kw battery in the volt may meet criteria for state incentives then the 8.8kw in the prime.
My only 2 nitpicks is I wish you could get cloth seats on the premier and for both the volt and prime if the roof went all the way to the rear like an Imprezza hatch.
