It’s always sad when this happens, but they understand the risks and know what they are getting into much like mountain climbers or free divers. While I love watching the Isle of Man runs I feel like it’s just a matter of time before, at the very least, the motorcycle portion of it gets axed.

Is this a saying? Because I’ve never heard it before and have no clue what this means

As long as people get all teary-eyed and romantic about young people killing themselves in pursuit of a lap time.

Seemed easier than a Thomas and Friends reference because most people don’t even realize Sodor is loosely based on Man.

There’s too much truth in this statement

Must be a lot of money being made, as I can’t imagine it being permitted in a society that heavily nannies so much else.

The IoM is subject to the crown but not part of the UK or the EU. They can do the fuck they want on their island, hence no speed limit outside of towns for example.

This tradition is akin to the running of the bulls.

I was thinking the crown mentality might have transferred.

It’s the nature of the beast. They know what they are doing and getting into.
Motor sport is dangerous.
The only true safe way is to not take part.

I hope it goes as long as people want to keep doing it. Obviously it’s sad when people die when you know if they just hadn’t taken that risk they’d be alive. But if that is what brings them joy then who is anyone to take that away from them when they only endanger themselves.
If you haven’t seen it, watch Road. It’s heartbreaking but at the same time so profoundly beautiful.

Yea, I know, and I don’t want to see it go away. I’m just surprised a bit that in this day and age it’s still running given how much more dangerous this particular race is.

It’s an island that itself has very very few speed limits with the principle of drive safely and responsibly.
These races are a more controlled environment for motorcycles and cars to race but even then there is going to be accidents be it a wheel slipping out on a bend, a wheel catching a kerb, a wet patch on the road, misjudging a corner and speed, etc...

I feel like running of the bulls is better, because it’s up front about the danger. Isle of Man just sounds like a moto race but riders drop like flies on it.

I’d like to see IoM TT continue, and I think it will for now, it’s just somewhat surprising to me that it still continues as it does. Most of the other types of sports that are this dangerous aren’t an organized televised event. I think that’s a big difference for a lot of people between “skier dies in avalanche” and “racer dies in crash”.

The reason that it still exists is the reason it’s as unique an event as it is. It’s the riders, the community, the culture of the place. I’m convinced that if it had no sponsors or attention outside of the area, the riders would still be there every year.
They televise daredevils and space launches live - this falls somewhere in between those two.

As long as people keep registering.

True but at this point any rider participating in it already knows the stakes.
