This is the Kogo, a Cayman Island flagged yacht worth $80M which was previously owned by one of the owners of the McLaren F1 team and owner of TAG watches. It’s now owned by Billionaire Samuel Tak Lee a Hong Kong based property developer (of course, it’s Vancouver).
It has been fueling up for the last 6 hours (takes 202,000 litres) which can’t be cheap to fill.
It’s a nice boat to be sure, but I think I could find more creative ways to blow $80M

my boss has a yacht. Nowhere near that size. Every day he comes in and bitches how all sorts of crap is broken and how boats are money pit and how he needs a new one ... then he starts looking at boats. looks at me and says you need a boat. I say - yeah. you make it sound soooo appealing.
I am with you in that I can find better ways to spend money. Boats, golf and few other things I can certainly live without.

Boats, show cars, golf all that kind of shit does not appeal to me.
I’m 26. I could never imagine having enough money to decide to blow some on any boat or a single round of golf.

I think I could find more creative ways of spending the $250k PLUS that he’s paying for fuel.
Good, it’s depressing how rich some people are

Maybe he should have invested in a decent engine instead of a yacht.

That’s a whole other world compared to how I live. Fun fact, they say a boat like that costs 10% of its value to operate it for the year. So $8 million a year to operate that beast. And that’s not likely including the fees to dock it at different ports, which I’m told can be in the 10’s of thousands, just to dock it for a short time. I can’t even imagine...

If you complain about the cost of a boat, you can’t afford a boat.

Having a yacht is about excess, I bet half of the reason they bought it was solely to spend money.

I’d imagine if you have an $80million yacht you probably have staff to make sure it’s available and ready to go whenever you show up.

Yeah it’s all relative really. Good for them that they can blow that kind of cash.

yeah. probably... but still. it isn’t a thing that appeals to me.
It’s most fun to be on a yacht that doesn’t belong to me. Get on. Have fun. Get off. go elsewhere.

It’s actually sort of disgusting, but yeah... good for them I guess.
Also, they should register their boat in England or Canada, not the Cayman Islands.

The 2 happiest days of boat ownership are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.

At higher than normal Vancouver prices. The floating Chevron he’s filling it at is usually 5-10 cents higher than a land based station

And us plebes are supposed to feel like we are killing the planet if we get 15 mpg. lol
But at least this is HK money rather than mainland money, so it is slightly less sketchy.

Over 53,000 gallons. Yikes.
Having owned powerboats, I never saw the attraction to something that big. If I can’t take it out by myself (with one person to handle lines) then it’s too big. But I guess if you need to entertain 50-100 people on the water it’s just the thing.

When my parents bought their first house, I looked in awe and thought to myself... how in the fuck... but the thing is... no matter at what point in time, you buy... and few year later you look back and say... that was cheap...
Say 20 years ago that 900k house was... how much? 200? 300?

I have a theory that there should be a cap in assets (there are about a million reasons it wouldn’t work but meh), like, you can live a life full of excess for 70 million dollars, any earnings after that should be taxed at 100% because it’s a market inefficiency. The fact that a country like mine (poor, unequal) celebrates a disgusting, corrupt billionaire like Carlos Slim is bewildering and worthy of study to correct.

A good 50-60% tax rate would be good, but don’t allow any tax breaks for any reason after a certian income threshold. That might help things along as well.
