Kinja'd!!!

Made good use of what little time I had over the weekend. The I6 was put on the stand and is pretty much ready to go. Started on pulling the V8, only to find that I didn’t have enough chain for the quick-and-dirty method of pulling it out from the intake manifold. So now I’ve got to dig a little more to get to a head bolt, that didn’t happen until it was 10pm so I called it a night. But this hunk of cast iron scrap will be out VERY soon.

Wait... I thought you were putting in a 302- are you swapping to a 300 I-6 now? That sounds like it would be a pain to swap. Is it not that bad?

Also, why? I know people around here are in love with the 300, but I’ve owned a few and I find them to be just as thirsty as any V8, underpowered and no more durable than a 302 or 351.

It still bolts right up to pretty much everything. Exhaust the only trouble part. Everything I’ve heard and others who’ve owned them love the 300, and they are quite a bit cheaper for a long block.

My first one got 8 MPG and could barely spin a tire on wet grass, the second one could nudge into the double digit MPGs, and I did quite a bit of towing with it but the engine sounded like a coffee can full of rocks- it lived a rough life though. The other one I had experience with was a carbureted ‘79 F-150. It was actually pretty alright. Mid teens MPG, and okay power. All my experiences were from a long long time ago, though.

The main thing that matters is that you’re getting the Bronco back on the road, and that you shouldn’t listen to my grumpy old man opinions.

You should be able to piece together an exhaust pretty easily.

I6 has a better low end torque curve and is smoother. It’s a better engine for doing truck things than a SBF.

Haha. This is one of the last ones, with EFI off a ‘94. I have at least partial downpipes with the engine, looks like they were cut off right at the cat so it shouldn’t be hard to get together. We’ll see how that fits once the engine is in.

The 302 for these years had 185 HP and 270 lb-ft at 2,400.

The 300 had 145 HP and 265 lb-ft at just 400 rpm less.

Smoothness is subjective. I’ve worked the bejeezus out of a 302... They’re a tough nugget, and the extra power was nice.

I ran mine with the pipes sawed off right in front of the cats for a while... Yes, I was 16 at the time.
