I spent most of last week driving a 1.8 NA Miata, and it was really good. Am I gonna bite the bullet later this summer? We’ll see. Either way, the G35 probably isn’t going anywhere until at least next year.

NAs are fun. NAs with NB swaps are hilariously fun although a bit pricey and/or time consuming to pull off. I watched a friend’s track day video of a VVT-swapped NA blow by his NB2 down the back stretch at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Let Oppo or the Miata.net forums know when you’re in the market for one! We could provide you advice and what to look out for when inspecting a Miata. Although pricey, most of the cars for sale on the forum are pretty loved and cared for.

I’ve driven an NB2-swapped NA! It was about as fast as my buddy’s thrashed bugeye WRX o_o

Truth be told, even an NA6 with a tasteful exhaust would be tons of fun. I’m more interested in the high redline (7k+ yes please!) and good chassis than absolute power.

I’ve been looking at all the major threads over on miata.net as well as GRM’s buyer’s guide! The biggest thing I’ll be looking for is a relative lack of rust, as everything else is relatively easily fixable. Second biggest “want” is a longnose crank car, although if a rust-free shortnose car comes along for the right price, I’m fine with doing the loctite fix. I’m not too scared of the shortnose crank, as shortnose cars have a relatively low overall failure rate (less than 10% IIRC). A factory vLSD or a Torsen would be nice, but I’ll take rust-free with an open diff over rusty with a Torsen any day. Clutch and slave cylinders are so cheap I’m not even worried and the CAS O-ring is so cheap I’d probably replace it pretty much on purchase for the sake of preventative maintenance.

Ah, I see you’ve educated yourself quite well on Miatas! 1.6s are fine starting points for upgrades like adding NA8 brakes, chassis braces, and slightly-lowered suspension to build a sharp-handling momentum car.

You might need to come down South to find a good rust-free example on a budget.

If the exchange rate was better I’d totally do a fly-n-drive. With the flight, the exchange rate, the campsites and the duties it would just be cheaper to buy a good one in Ontario.

I have a buddy who has the chassis bars lying around and Keith from Flyin’ Miata is on GRM so who knows about upgrades? ;)
