Mark coolant, cooling system and such off the list of things im apprehensive to work on.
Chemically flushed my cooling system, new water pump and t stat. Still hate cooling systems though.
Turns out the cruiser is a great car to learn cooling system work on. Hoses are easy to get at, thermostat is 3 easy to get at bolts, water pump is 6 easy to get at bolts. Only trouble was getting the belts loose enough... Until I realized Toyota is awesome and made the tension bolt a straight shot from the wheel well, after that it was easy.
If this doesn’t solve the heat issues it’s fan clutch mod time then new radiator... Again.

Cooling system is a weak point of 80 series.

I dread the day that I have to replace the water pump. It’s not that I have to remove the intake and radiator, as I did just that today. It’s not that I have to remove the accessory belts, since the tensioner bolts are stupid easy to get to. It’s not that the pump sits in an unreachable corner of the under-hood space, since once the intake and radiator are taken out the pump lies right in front of the engine. It’s just that Mazda, in their finite wisdom, decided to put the water pump on their B engines *behind* the timing belt, thus making a water pump job into a timing belt job. And anything that has to do with the valve train just gives me the heebie jeebies.

Its a lot of truck for the motor and its constantly working really hard, plus the HG is very temp sensitive. Where my GX will be happy at 220, that’s the beginnings of bad news on an 80 so you have to keep the cooling systems in tip top shape if unless you enjoy head gasket jobs.

I share your pain but I don’t share your engine...mine’s a VW 5 cylinder diesel.

I’ve been putting off my coolant reroute/belts/pump/etc. Job for months now for these very reasons. Feel your pain
