I’d like to say this: everyone shitting on Offset for not buying J’Mmar a fancy ass car and for giving him an Altima can shut the hell up. The dude wasn’t expecting anything in return and is lucky enough to get a car, and it’s better than him walking every day. And if something were to happen to the hypothetical fancy car, he’d have to pay a shit ton to get it fixed and he doesn’t have that money, so an affordable, cheap, and reliable ride makes perfect sense here. Oh, who am I kidding. None of the shitheads are gonna see this and if they still did, they wouldn’t care, being the stupid internet asswipes they are. This is why I generally hate people. This is also probably why I don’t have rights on Jalopnik either, because even if I were to say this peacefully it would be blown out of proportion into a massive shitshow anyways. And this probably falls under shit stirring so I’ll probably end up deleting this after a few minutes but I just have to get it off my chest. Sorry.

Doesn’t the U.S. also have a weird law/rule that you pay the DMV or something a percentage of the value of the car.

Also doesn’t the U.S. have a law/rule to pay the tax on a gift such as this or on winnings. Because wasn’t Oprah partially ridiculed for giving cars to all her audience and some couldn’t afford to register them.

Registration fees are usually assessed based on the value of the car, so a newer/more expensive car is going to cost more to register, and you have to pay federal taxes on gifts over $14k. Very smart of him to gift him a car that was a few years old. He was actually helping the guy out rather than just making a headline grabbing gesture.

I think you’re talking about the sales tax. The thing about that is it’s purely based on what you and the owner “agreed” to pay. So if the guy says he sold it for $2,000, then you pay about 6% of that for sales tax.

Although it’s not like the DMV will actually look at the check you wrote.*wink* *wink*

Mexico has a 25 year rule for non US or EU cars (hopefully the TPP11 changes that) and its pretty dukb, in most cases I guess countries just have protectionist laws from the pre-globalized era.

This is probably exactly how you get out of the greys, it’s been a while since I’ve had to get out, having had to get out of the grey many times on FP (because for a while I never figured to write down my burner pass code) it seemed to get out, you just needed your comments starred or replied to a certain amount of times. So doing some shit stirring would probably be the ticket.

Although as much as FP has grown idk if it’s still the same policy.

Beforehand. Mexico used to be so protectionist that we used to have some product shortages; this wasn’t helped by the 1994 banking crisis hat basically wiped up most of our industry save a few juggernauts like Cemex and Bimbo.

Actually before NAFTA if you wanted to sell a car in Mexico it must’ve been assembled here, and foreign investment must be acompanied with a 50/50 ownership between Mexicans and the foreginers.

The VW puebla factory used to be 50% owned by Mexican investors, and the only mass market Mexican brand, VAM, used to bring KDs and assemble Jeeps, Ramblers, and other AMC cars here. Then Renault bought it out.
