Local photog and I swapped cameras for a shoot. He used my D3100 in an attempt to prove I was just using it wrong and I used his 7D (not his main shooter, the 7D is his backup camera). We both had CPLs and 50mm prime lenses on crop bodies so we figured it would be fairly similar.

Conclusion: I need a new camera, lol. This 7D is glorious.

Car is my mom’s. Auto base model but it looks cool I guess.

Being a geography nerd, is that Wichita?

Cool...my parents lived in Andover for a couple years back when I was in college. I thought it looked a little familiar

I also have a D3100 that I got several years ago when it was still the newest D3xxx series body. (I bought it with proceeds from reselling Super Bowl tickets I had... post for another time.) I think we are on the same page - I haven’t been impressed. I’ve used it with a variety of lenses and it seems to have issues focusing with all of them and is also just generally clunky to operate. We had several similarly priced Canon Rebels at work and I always got better results with them. At this point I’m on the fence about trying out a D5xxx body or just selling the whole kit getting with a Canon DSLR or Fuji X-System camera which I’ve used and love.

PS if you don’t have a DX 55-200mm VR I have one I’ll unload pretty cheap. Long story but I ended up with 2 of them.

I am a simple man... I see a Kappa, I click star.

...but I’m not sure how I feel about the wheels. I do know 5x110 are hard to find.

Yeah... the OZ wheels are a bit questionable. They are the worst thing in the universe to clean.,

“issues focusing with all of them” oh good it isn’t just me. I actually have a 55-200VR but it won’t focus no matter WHAT I do. Not sure if the lens is broken or the body. Looking to upgrade ASAP at this point. Probably to a Sony A6000, because I’ve been super impressed with those things and the dynamic range is incredible.

That’s weird, I have that lens with my D5300 and it has no issues focusing, same with the D5100 before it

Well it’s more like they remind me of the Canadian Tire winter tire wheel covers back like 20 years ago, lol.

I’m thinking the AF sensor in the D5xxx series must be a lot better.

Yeah I’ve had issues with just about every lens I’ve used with it - it just seems to say it is focused when it is slightly off a fair amount of the time. The 55-200 does seem to do it more often though. And the worst part is the pictures look fine on the LCD if you don’t zoom in and then you get them on a PC and realize it wasn’t right. I know it can’t be what I’m doing because I don’t have issues with other cameras and I’ve tested it with stationary subjects and found the same issues. I’ve heard really good things about the A6000. Probably can’t go wrong there.

Funny thing about the D3100 LCD is even when I do zoom in on photos they all look blurry, like you’re zooming in on a thumbnail and not the full res photo (which is probably what it does). An in focus and out of focus photo look identical on the preview LCD so I think I have my settings right and then... nope. Totally fucked.

I’m glad I’m not the only one having issues with this damn camera. Read the reviews and it seems like if you can’t get flawless photos you are the problem not the camera but it seems like this model has some issues.

That would make sense. I have no experience with previous models so I can’t guess, but I know I’ve heard good things about the AF in the D5xxxs
