Mechanic came back to me with a general diagnosis. Axle bearing is shot, shaft seal is shot, right rear axle is likely shot, and I’m hoping the 1 inch of play didn’t fuck up the differential gears when I was driving yesterday.

So we’re looking at a possible axle rebuild. I’ve authorized the mechanic to do a full teardown on the Ford 8.8 axle. I would do this myself, but I don’t want to drive to Stew’s on a bum axle. The sooner I have my own garage, the better...

This is not going to be a cheap fix, since labor is expensive.

I’d go to a gear shop that does nothing but this sort of work.

Junkyard axle might be cheaper. P71 parts are usually plentiful, but time and or logistics of that route might not work for you

Police Car. I’ve also hit curbs and went off road once thanks to Google Maps.

A 2010 is a bit more bespoke than the average P71.

On a blown axle that’s mashing fluids and metal shavings? No.

I just checked 26 used 8.8 Hersey’s this morning to see if they are usable. That’s enoug 8.i for me until Monday morning rolls around. Some of my coworkers and I looked around the internet and discovered something. Outside of OE manufactures we probably put together the most GM and ford differential in the country.

Indeed. Especially as mine has a limited-slip differential, which does complicate parts-compatibility checking by a little bit.
