Just to show the stitching. The seat back cushion was loose on the seat frame, and floppy when the folks were getting situated. To my perception, the interior build quality was positively alarming.
My friend is very proud of his 2016 F-150
Platinum
. He just bought it used and paid something in the lower thirties for it. I could not believe how
flimsy
it was, the seats, in particular. Hasty-looking stitching and the seats just sort of
flopped
as you squirmed around getting comfortable in them, though they were reasonably supportive. The doors felt flimsy also, and
plasticky
. Now, to be fair, we were four big dudes and the crew cab was spacious, with plenty of legroom in the back. The rear seat belts had air bags in them and made them rather uncomfortable to wear. Thinks I: the backseat is the best place to test drive a vehicle from...
And his truck has a V6 Ecowhatever engine, which I hope is dependable for him. I don’t know what for a transmission, maybe one of those 8-speeds?
Yikes. But he loves it and that’s what matters.

V6 Ecoboost, supposedly even quicker than the old V8s. The 2016s were before the era of the 10-speed, so yes, they do have the 8-speed.
I still prefer the visual design of this truck over the new one they came out with.

It’s probably the most practical vehicle he could have purchased based on what you can do with it. Depending on how equipped, the Ecoboost can tow 8,000 lbs (2.7L) or 13,000 lbs (3.5L) while able to hit 0-60 in 5.8 seconds. They can get up to 26 mpg highway (2.7L), though you have to drive it like you’re trying to win a hypermiling contest to do it, but still.
Add the 4-doors and seating for 5, tons of cargo space and there isn’t a single vehicle on the market that can match what his one truck can do. Whether it’s the best vehicle for him however is subjective and doesn’t matter. People will buy what they want, not what they need, otherwise there wouldn’t be sports cars or luxury cars for that matter.
A lot of modern trucks have luxury amenities but plasticky interiors for a reason. They are based on $26,000 truck interiors even though they can go up to $60,000. The other is the material needs to be durable enough for hard use. Plasticky interior door handles doesn’t mean not durable. Even Mercedes does this with their commercial and business grade vehicle interiors.
On a side note, that truck has the 6-speed auto (10-speed in 2018) besides the original 3 year/36K bumper to bumper warranty, but also has a 5 year/60K powertrain. Just in case he didn’t get an extended warranty.

After driving all of this generation’s big 3 repeatedly I came to a conclusion that the Ram was best styled, the F150 felt the best initially, but the Silverado seems like it’d be the most reliable and well built

There’s quicker, and then there’s towing your boat. In my case, towing my tent trailer. I’m daily driving a ‘97 GMC Safari — which snacks on $20 bills at the gas station — and the old 4.3L V6 is dependable, if not quick, and is adequately strong.

Just crappy, flimsy seats. I was shocked. Another friend has an ‘05 crew cab Ford with the big diesel engine and the seats are cloth and robust and very comfortable. The ‘16's seats are a pale comparison.

I hear. I only meant to give my impressions and didn’t mean to sound as if I had a clue what I was talking about, but that picture of all the visible stitches, and the way the seat cushions were loose on the seat frames, and the way the seat bottom felt under my booty in the back, did not say
quality
to me. And the entire vehicle is outside my taste anyhow.

My neighbor next door has a Duramax that’s on something like its fourth set of injectors. I guess they’ve finally worked that out, and this discussion isn’t really about big diesel engines, but I have always been a Chevy man simply because I’ve always
liked the styling
better. The Impala was always a better car in every respect than the Crown Victoria, which prejudiced me. However, today, the Fusion is a better car than the Impala, so I am not unable to modify my opinion. Chevy dumped the Impala first; now Ford is going to dump sedans entirely.
The press say that Ford has spent oodles of time and money conceiving the F-150, which is one of the reasons I was so surprised at my impression of the interior of my friend’s new truck.

Oh trust me, going from a high-end premium vehicle inside a truck regardless of price can sometimes be jarring when it comes to the interior materials.
However, it is a used truck, I wonder if the seats were possibly removed for some sort of repair and weren’t installed back properly. The seat covers could have been removed to repair something like a heating element and not put back right. The materials Ford uses for leather is borderline vinyl feeling because they designed them to handle mud covered jeans without damage, but that crappy stitching looks factory.

Maybe I just expect too much. What is an automobile but an engine and a transmission and some seats? I owned a ‘12 Impala for a minute and I couldn’t believe how bad the seats were. I’ve always been a Chevy man... My parents own a ‘12 Fusion and the seats are
much
better. Strong V6 engine in that car as well.

...that crappy stitching looks factory.
The picture speaks for itself. What struck me was how loose the seat padding was on the seat frames. But hey: my friend is ecstatic about his new truck and I drove home from our meeting in my ‘97 GMC Safari — with seats from an ‘05 — with 243,xxx miles on it.
My seats are recently modified
to go back an extra two inches and what a difference. My Safari snacks on twenty-dollar bills at the AMPM, but $35 grand and de-preesh and expensive insurance, and you
still
have to buy gas...

Seats in American vehicles tend to be a joke, to be fair.
There have been very few American vehicles I have sat in with reasonably comfortable seats. Those would be an ‘03 Silverado with cloth seats, a ‘98 Dakota with cloth seats, an ‘06 Montego with leather seat, and an ‘06 G6 with leather seats.

The next car I purchase will have to have decent seats that I am comfortable in. My Legacy’s seats are OK, but they’ve very little padding and very little play for repositioning. My 5 foot 11 frame barely fits in the bucket.

Oh right, I forgot about 4WD... If I was already buying a truck, I’d totally get it (and I’d add a set of KO2s), but then I’d actually use it. Winters have gotten really unpredictable around here, and I wouldn’t be opposed to hitting some light trails occasionally.
I can tell you the current GM trucks have pretty damn good interiors! No hard plastics anywhere – it’s all smooth and soft to the touch, yet seems pretty tough and easy to clean, based on the worn-out work trucks I’ve seen. The 2017/18 Rams are decent, somewhere close to F-150s overall. All the 2019s I sat in felt cheap, though.

I stopped by my local Ford/Honda dealer today to buy some rubber mats for my wife’s new Accord and decided to check out a used F150 Lariat’s seats for comparison. It was very nice, taught fit with good stitching. Looked far better than what you pictured with your buddies. This example was a 2015 model with 47,000 miles.
Maybe have your buddy check out some other used trucks and look at his again, maybe if there is an issue, the dealership who just purchased it from can take care of it. I just assumed it was normal “crappy” stitching because of a 2010 I owned before was similar.

Good idea, I would help him out and check and see for yourself if there could be an issue with his or if it’s normal. But if you think his is unusual, you may want to bring it to his attention so he can have it fixed before it’s too late with the dealer.
I think the Lariat is actually the lowest range, then Limited and finally Platinum is the highest level. Our Accord has leather, and I have to say I was rather impress with the leather in the Lariat I was sitting in.
