...with that ‘tablet stuck on the dash’ look because, well, it is. No, that’s not the permanent placement; I’m waiting for the iOttie mount to arrive, as well as a glass screen protector and silicone case. I may have to add some sort of hood to minimize glare and reflections.
The cellular-equipped mini 2 was purchased to be used primarily as a GPS, with audio and OBD2 functions as well. I’d like to find a decent large-screen MP3/podcast player app to use whilst driving. It would be nice to use CarPlay, but I don’t feel like jailbreaking the unit.
I have another burner, try to guess it!

I’ve recently decided I want to do this with a car, I’m wondering if it’ll work with my current Volvo somehow. Although I’ll need to find a cheap tablet first.

Don’t go too cheap on the tablet - learn from my experience. The key is to get one with a built-in GPS receiver, and those are the ones that have a SIM card slot so that you can tie it to a phone carrier; you just need the unit with that hardware, but you don’t actually need a data plan to make this work.
A couple of years ago I tried this with a new, inexpensive Android tablet from Verizon/Best Buy and it was so frustratingly slow and unresponsive, even when brand new, that I haven’t used it in ages. Then I tried with a Motorola Atrix Android phone that even had a car dock for just this purpose and it wasn’t much better. You get what you pay for, and I didn’t pay much in either of th0se cases.
My trusty old iPhone 6S Plus was working fine, but I wanted to free it up and get something with a larger screen, and also wanted to have another screen available. I bought this older iPad mini 2 for a reasonable amount, use Google Maps in offline mode and it works exceptionally well. This tablet may seem a little slow when surfing the web, but as a GPS and MP3 player it is great, and better and quicker than the fancy standalone GPS units I’ve had. I can also run my old favorite OBD2 program, DashCommand, on it as well. There’s probably other software out there that is better suited to navigation, and perhaps I’ll try some, but I know Google Maps and it works for me.

Yeah, I was thinking of getting something used off eBay as opposed to buying something new and cheap.
