This has been for sale for almost a year and the price keeps creeping downward. Now, I’m not really a FWD guy and I don’t know shit about Alfas (other than the usual tropes: Clarkson says you’re not a true petrolhead until you’ve owned one, and everyone else says to stay the hell away), but I have to admit it’s growing on me.
It’s just so perfectly 1993. And the seller’s not wrong that it would really stand out among the crowd of old BMWs and Japanese tuner cars that are popular here.

That’s a really cool looking 164 but still, $5700?

I was lucky enough to drive a friend’s 164 QV a few years back. It was glorious! That sound really is one of the best V6 noises of all time, if not THE best. The car did torque steer a fair amount but the handling and steering were much better than the Saab 9000 turbo I drove. The interior is also fantastically eighties in person. I say, why not! I think the biggest concern would be resigning yourself to trading it in at a dealership at some point because they’re impossible to sell.

It’s nice, and even though the guy says he’s firm on price (reductions over time notwithstanding), I don’t get the “I know what I have” vibe, or that he’s trying to boost the price because of what he thinks his mods are “worth”. The problem is that he’s selling what would basically be a third car, and the pool of buyers with that kind of budget for a car that old with that many miles isn’t large. Could you daily it without worry, and if you did, what would it cost to keep it up?
EDIT: okay, the more I’m reading about these, the more I’m thinking maybe it would be cool to daily this car. Apparently there are some things to stay up on, and it sounds like you’d be advised to find a mechanic with the old equipment to diagnose them, but if you’re willing to give it the attention it needs, it might be worth the price. People are certainly asking as much for well-kept Integras of this age and getting it.

Well, if I bought it, it would be a third car.

I don’t think Alfa’s are much different in reliability than any other 25 year old Euro car. If you buy it as a weekend/vanity car, you will be fine. If you buy it as a wear it out, and toss it car you will probably be fine (though the Alfisti will reserve a circle in hell for you).
But if you buy it but expect daily usage and low maintenance of a Honda. It’s not for you.

Get rid of the wood wheel, it may look cool, but the USA standard leather wrap wheel is much better for actually, y’know, driving. Also, scrap that silly shift lever, the stock stick length made for perfect throw length and feel, the tall lever will just make it feel like driving a bus (or a pickup truck) with surprisingly good shift feel, instead of the near perfection of the stock shifter. He’s right, it needs to be driven. The idle air solenoid is probably all gunked up, and the electrics get squirrely unless used regularly. I still miss my ‘92 S. It had a bit over 400k miles on it when we parted ways. Great handling, very comfortable, terrific in the snow, fast (as in high speed, even if it’s 0-60 is kinda meh by today’s standards... That car was made to cover miles at over 100 all day long) and that sound... Such a delicious sound.
If you are willing to keep up on the maintenance and drive it regularly, it’s a great car. They die of sadness if you don’t drive them, and they die of front suspension bushing failure or snapped timing belts or clogged external coolant passages if you don’t keep up with the required maintenance (mine had fatal rear subframe rust) that one looks good, but it better run well too at that price. The wheels look good, but those plus the stupid shifter and wood wheel make me cringe a little... The ANSA exhaust is practically required modification on these, but why he did the other stuff but not the euro-projector headlight mod makes me think he may “know what he has” but he doesn’t really understand... And that makes me worry/sad.
