My wife has been driving the S3 a lot lately. She said, “I drive like such a dick when I have your car, it’s weird.” I said, “well yea!? When you’ve got the juice you make the rules, haha.” She agreed saying that she does things she that never cross her mind in the Forester because a. it’s fast and b. it’s really easy to drive fast because it does all of the work for you. The S3 isn’t the fastest car on the road by any stretch, but the way the power is delivered just entices you to use it.

Kinja'd!!!

While you might say that it takes a little away from the driving experience (and it does) it is oh so fun to whip that Audi around because it’s like a video game. It’s so easy.

Anyway, what say Oppo?

I’ll give you my inter monologue for each vehicle. Then you give me yours.

Ranger - Here I am enjoying my slow bouncy little pickup truck. I’m courteous, I spot my merges and lane changes well in advance. I’m proud of the work I’ve put into this truck, and am constantly thinking about the next thing I will do to it when I’m driving.

M3 - “Oh yea! Merging onto the highway, time to get it! Hear that raspy 6 scream! Ok, now I’ve merged let’s keep as far as we can from other drivers because this ma baby. I’m every bit as polite in as I am in the truck. Ok fuck face I see your beater mustang get away from me. Nope I’m not going to drag you here. Alright, getting off the highway now... fuckingdickfartmotherfucker cool cut me off. Ya know what I don’t care I’m just going to take it easy until I get on some back roads and do some spirited driving, not too spirited though...have to be careful!”

Forester - “Here I am in my regular car being extra careful because I likely have my pregnant wife and dogs in the car. At least there are 3 pedals.”

Grom - “Ladies and gentlemen start your engines for the Isle of Tripper Grom TT! Let’s find the tightest, least traveled back roads and go flat out! Catching air over that little bridge, leaning over so far I occasionally catch a footpeg. Full tuck on the straightaways to get from 60 to 65. Whoooooooooooooooooooooo!”

S3 - “Fuck out of the way, clowns! Oh, you’re going to suddenly decide to speed up while you’re riding the passing lane because you see me coming? Nope I’m getting that pass because I’m way faster than you. How am I getting such good gas mileage?”

Happy Friday!

I drive a 1985 turbo RX7... it’s my daily. If I crash, I most likely will get severely hurt, so I like to say I drive similarly to how bikers ride their bike (though I have ZERO experience with bikes lol). I stay on the throttle a lot, go faster than traffic to not worry about what is coming behind me and avoid weird people driving in front of me by passing them as quickly as I can. So yes, in a way, what I drive changes how I drive.

Now if we’re talking power, it doesn’t do much to the way I drive... Be it a 500hp Skyline or a 300hp FD RX-7. How nimble the car is does make me push the car a bit though... My Mini in Paris during rush hour, I’m in heaven. Boring cars make me drive super slow as I despise hearing the engine rev or the slushbox shift... ThaT’s about it :)

When I had my WRX I was much more calm. Yea i got on it on the highway ramps but I knew I had the power to dust most cars I encountered and I didn;t need to prove it. Now with the wimpy Focus I’m aggravated and less friendly. Maybe I was just happy with the WRX and didn’t five a fuck what else was going on.

I definitely drive like a more of a dick in my 335xi. Since moving to the DC area I’ve realized I have to be careful with it, being stick shift and modded with all the usual bolt-ons and a tune. I’ll try to hit a gap in stop-n-go traffic and the turbo spools a little *too* much and I’m like uh oh whoa hey that car in front of me is too close hang on gotta hit the brakes!

Yeah, somewhat I suppose.

When I’m driving anything else but the van, I can merge using the throttle instead of the brake. It just gives me more options because they are quicker.

Same goes for the motorcycle, It’s just easier to merge sometimes.

My attitude doesn’t change much between them all. Well, maybe I’m a little more impatient with bad, dangerous habits when I’m on the motorcycle.

Sure, driving different vehicles affects your style of driving, but does changing vehicles alter what kind of driver you are? Do certain vehicles turn people into jerks, or were they always jerks to begin with?

I am definitely more mellow in the fintail than in the modern car (although I regularly “test” the horn in both). When you are in a car that isn’t particularly fast, slowpokes on the road become less of an issue. I guess for that car, the plodding timid driving style of this region makes it so I am never holding anyone up.

all of my cars have been boring old beaters wich i drove like a boring old beater driver (wich is to say... kind of like an asshole coz aint care)

exception being the panda.... i drove that like a madman.. having to floor it to get it moving at anything resembling traffic speed encourages bad behaviour

slow down for turns or roundabouts HA! i think not... it took me nearly a week to get this speed up (and because its so light it didnt destroy the tires nearly as much as you’d think from all the squeeling)

I’ve owned a 2005 WRX then a 2004 STi. Most of my pals have owned at least one of each so I’ve driven a ton of them. They always turn me back into a teenager, it’s not just that they’re quick they’re so fun to drive I can’t put my finger on exactly why.

I always feel like I didn’t get enough time with the STi. I bought it when I was 19, got 5 tickets in 6 months hit a deer and then traded it on the M3. I test drove a 2015 when I was shopping for the S3 and thought, “nope I am not yet mature enough for this.”

I don’t think they change the “kind” of driver you are. If you’re a shithead you’ll drive like one in a prius, 3 series, or Ferrari. We’ve all seen it.

I drove my 128i like an ass a lot. I think knowing I had the power and brakes to get in and out of spots helped.

I drive my Mazda 3 pretty regular, set the cruise, don’t really wind it up much, its my good mpg commuter.

My Autozam, I wind it up so I can hear that glorious 3 cylinder turbo noise, and I can take corners at almost any speed I desire.

My 89 Suzuki Intruder (which has a larger engine than my Autozam (LOL) I drive like please people, do not kill me when you aren’t paying attention to the road.

Yes.

Cars have personalities, they influence the driver.

‘77 Cougar, it was a couch on wheels. Drove it like a couch on wheels: relaxed and lazy. The only car I’ve ever owned where I didn’t wish for a manual.

‘05 Legacy GT, it was an angry car. Angry that it didn’t move quickly under boost, had to prove to everyone that it was fast even though it wasn’t an WRX. Had so much road rage in that car.

Most of the cars I’ve owned fit somewhere in between those two extremes. Had cars that felt mischevious, cars that hated to travel at low speeds, cars that were so boring that I couldn’t wait to get rid of them.

I’m not sure what year your Forester is, but our 17' is a fuckin’ weird clutch it took me a long time to get used to. it’s normal in first but in second you have to let it out with almost no gas. In 3rd&4th it depends when you shift, low revs its fine, but higher revs and it’s weird again.

“I drive like please people, do not kill me when you aren’t paying attention to the road.”

Really sums it up for me, haha. This is the baseline thought when I am driving/riding. I swear some days myself and motorcycles are the only people not buried in their phones on my commute. I did once see a guy on a motorcycle using his phone while riding! On the damn highway!

I notice that I feel more serene and above the fray in my K900 than I did in my RX-8. It’s a calming car. The size, quiet, and horsepower make me feel like I have nothing to prove and can do anything if I really need to.

My wife is kinda the opposite of yours. She started out driving in a base Mercury Lynx, and has driven every car since the same way, conservatively, always with her hands at 10 and 2. Never, ever above the speed limit.

We take the BMW’s/Mini’s to an inde mechanic who has 3 awesome rental cars one being a tuned 450 horse 335. He let my wife take it when she was having work done on her cooper S. He said “be careful, this one is really fast!” less than 5 minutes later...ticket.

I have wanted to take the MSC since I got the Grom, but they make it impossible. The classes are at super weird weekday hours and far from my house (I also work 8-6). I don’t touch main roads on the Grom except to cross them to get to other back roads.

Fiesta ST - aggressive, carving up country roads

CX-3 - normal, just a-b

Truck - slow, easy cruising

Stereotypical aggressive NJ driver checking in. Driving a slow car (usually a Cruze or an Outback) definitely helps mellow me out/keeps me in the middle lane.

C5Z - Usually drive during low traffic hours as to not get too impatient or draw attention. Power is always on tap, but only 50% can actually be used at any given moment on regular road. Love cruising highways in this thing.

Legacy GT - Waiting for boost just makes me more impatient. But it makes for a great four season commuterbeater.

The Ranger description pretty much sums up driving the Bronco. I never feel like I’m in a rush, just taking things slow and steady.

Driving the 850 I just take any opportunity to give it some gas either at a green light or an on ramp to hear the straight 5 get angry.

Mazda5 - I can pretty much do whatever I want wherever I am because minivans are invisible and fly under everyone’s radar. Nice multi-link independent suspension on all wheels, rev-happy engine and a slick 6MT means I am capable of doing crazy things not expected from a van.

Corvette: I like to give it a little gas on the highways to hear the exhaust growl. But then I creep along when I’m driving through downtown, because people don’t look where they’re going and I know that if I have to turn into any parking lot, I’m going to scrape and cringe a little bit.

Jetta: Never before have I driven a more vanilla car. Why even go fast, there’s zero sensation of speed. Numb steering and braking. It’s a well-built and perfectly reasonable car, but I get absolutely nothing out of driving it. It truly is the European Camry.

El Camino = I drive it pretty slow. Mostly because it’s pretty slow. Occasionally I get on it because the noises it makes are fun.

Nissan 720 = Giggling like a school girl. Every time I drive it I am amazed at the way a lowered $250 mini truck drives EXACTLY as one would assume a lowered $250 mini truck would drive. Plus I am 6'4" tall so I am wedged in there pretty good.
