I was cruising through craigslist posts and saw a grand torino for sale. Not running. Wanting over 5k.

Made me think of the movie which made me think that before the movie, I didn’t know a damn thing about this car.

In the movie, the youngens were super interested in the car. Was it really that desirable or could it have been any old car to make a movie around? Would have been awesome - Bad Ass Clint Eastwood in Pinto!

Why don’t I see anyone restoring these? Racing these? Don’t see any on the road.

I’d say they’re like Mavericks used to be. Haven’t hit their stride as a classic yet, but will. Most are sitting.

I think a lot of hype is via the movie - 72 is a little late for the big money part of the craze, and they were ignored before. They have a look, also somewhat reminiscent of Mad Max style cars, but power was starting to wane by then. I think maybe its obscurity was a role in the movie choice. No doubt a few have been restored since the movie, that maybe otherwise would not have been touched. A 72 Sportsroof with a Cobra Jet or 429 is a desirable car now.

Funny thing, Eastwood also drove a Gran Torino (sedan) in the movie “Magnum Force”.

back about 20 years ago I had a 1975 maverick. What a turd that was. Since I know the shape and the car, I see so many of them in movies. Bad boys 2 has like 5-7 shots of them. Probably same one but you know what I mean.

I have a coworker who’s into Mavericks. Given one that’s a two-door, stripped down a little, has engine improvements, and is a thin-bumper early model, there’s not a whole lot wrong with it as a rabble rouser/working man’s hero. Like having a two door Falcon Sprint.

Don’t forget one of the “bad guys” in the 4th Fast and Furious drove a 72 Gran Torino as well. I have always been partial to Gran Torinos.

With the 72s being my favorite it is the styling of them. They have that coke bottle shape like the early 70s Firebirds, but as a larger car. It feels like Ford had stolen a few Italian designers from all of Italy’s major design companies and made them help design the car.

I call BS on it. More appropriate is rust everywhere. no hood scoops. no racing stripes. Scuba gear is to raise it up from the sea bed because brakes were shot and you drove it into the water. Chick is there to warm you up from hypothermia and jazz misspelled. Should have had an i in jazz.
