Seems to be quite popular to demonstrate AWD system prowess. Sure it does show how torque is managed back to front left to right but I think this basically simulates starting off on an icy/slushy patch or getting up a driveway and not more. I care more about how torque vectoring helps manage understeer/oversteer in both dry and wet conditions for more neutral handling at driving speeds a la SH-AWD

Also disclaimer that tires matter a lot and a proper set of winters can solve a lot of these challenges.

Thoughts? Rants? Raves? Which is the best AWD system? (JK let’s not go down that rabbit hole)

what’s the point of AWD testing if they’re not running over people

They’ll have to wait for the next Purge before they can test it out.

RWD is better for crowd control - allows sharper turn in, and steering with the throttle.

I’m with you -I don’t see the point of this unless the car was incapable of moving off of the rollers, in which case it would just be a fail.

I still think AWD in the “winters” around me, it’s a waste of gas. Winter tires, take your metal foot off the pedal and don’t drive like a mad man, AWD is not a must. I’ve driven up my friend’s mansion of an icy driveway just fine, he was surprised I actually made it (because his fancy Range Rover had no-season tires.)

I’ll stick with my traction control-less RWD.

Apparently Honda upgraded the CR-V’s AWD system after it failed this test. Maybe this was the finally the change it needed it to do 0-60 in 5.5 seconds flat.

I think you’d want an AWD/RWD switch like the new M5 has. Keep it in RWD mode to line up the shot, then switch to AWD for the last second acceleration burst and extra grip to power through.

I think the test is decent but it will always have people saying you turned off TC/stability and system wont work without it ()which I’m one of them) si i’m not totally sold on just this

I believe the second test is more important. With Traction Control on the cars should climb the hill. Go to Cincinnati in the winter and right after it snows or ices over. That is a real world test, if anything it should be steeper. If these car companies advertise that they are better for the winter, prove it.

And I know snow tires should help but some people cant afford 2 sets of tires because their 84 month loans. And granted the snow tires will dig better, but they can only do so much and there are times you need the back tires to push. With the CRV and Highlander it should climb. The VW, it did its job so good enough.
