First off, my wife and I are Star Wars fans but not one of those hardcore rabid fans who over-analyze and nitpick everything. I have always enjoyed the movies, even The Last Jedi (but not the prequels except in parts, I won’t go that low)

It was a fun gangster-heist action movie despite being predictable at times. Visuals were good, exciting action, decent characters (I liked Khaleesi’s character, Loved Donald Glover’s Lando potrayal) excellent acting all around. Although I will say I completely and purposefully ignored making direct comparison between Alden and Harrison Ford. He was fine but lacked the charisma and screen presence especially when sharing it with Woody Harrelson and Paul Bettany. If you are looking for the ultimate tribute to Ford’s portrayal you will be disappointed.

I was surprised because several of the reviewers I trust said it was “SoSo” “Decent” “Just fine”.

I cannot say for sure what your experience may be, it’s no Rogue One when you compare the standalones, and I did see several Oppos liked it. My 2 cents.

We saw it last night. The theater was pretty deserted, and I don’t understand why. Anyway, we enjoyed it. I liked the way Solo started out a brash but clueless kid and evolved through the movie to glimmers of the brash but slick pirate we were to eventually know and love. Solid effort and worth the price of admission.

I had a confused moment near the end when I saw what looked like Darth Maul. I had to do my Star Wars time line math and make sure that it couldn’t be him. So, something is up there. There is clearly more of Solo’s story to tell, if the box office takes make it worth Disney’s while to tell it.

Harrison Ford has made much of how he wanted Solo to be killed because he thought he was such a boring character. I never understood that. To my mind, Han Solo always had the potential to be the most complicated, interesting character of the whole Star Wars saga. I think this movie validated my conviction.

Actually Empire and Star Wars.

Rogue One comes after, then Jedi, Solo, TLJ, TFA, and the other two.

A few things to note about the Darth Maul appearance:

You just see him cut in half and free falling in Phantom Menace, it implies he’s dead, but you don’t know for sure

In the old cannon, he actually survived being cut in half and appeared many times in the cartoons. He had robot legs

When you see him on Solo, he has robot legs. He is also played by the same guy who played Maul in Phantom Menace, and voiced by the guy who played him in the cartoons.

So yeah, pretty sure that’s Darth Maul.

It’s definitely Darth Maul. If you accept the idea that he didn’t die when Qui Gon cut him in half . I’m pretty sure the timeline works out, too. I bought tix the day before, and I had my choice of seats in the theater. Not sure why it’s not selling better. We enjoyed it, but I still think that Rogue One is better.

The bigger issue is... after getting cut in half, does Darth Maul still have the ability to take a shit?

Or take a piss?

And what about his penis?

And imagine if someone said to him “You don’t have the balls...”

One of my issues with it is that in the original trilogy, Han’s character is a scoundrel (Leia’s word), in it just for himself, that eventually comes around and helps his friends and the cause of the rebellion. It seems like it cheapens that to make young Han already a good, loyal guy at heart.

I don’t know anything about canon vs. non-canon, etc. I just watch the movies. I haven’t read a Star Wars book since middle school.

The guy was cut in half in a way that removed some vital bits. It’s like the Loveless character in the Wild Wild West movie. Can you survive in a wheelchair with no legs? Sure. Can you do it while missing everything from your rib cage down? No. I’m not saying they couldn’t invoke something-something-advanced medical technology and do it, but it’d be a pretty big leap that I hope is justifiable in subsequent plot lines. Otherwise, it’s an unnecessary stretch, especially because we subsequently got Darth Tyranus and then Darth Vader (who is clearly the emperor’s number 1 guy) and never heard mention of Darth Maul in all the rest of the prequels or Disney-age movies until now. I dunno, maybe he was kept in a closet somewhere? Why?

Also, there is that “always there are only two”, which I suppose has no basis in necessity, but seemed like dogma they created and adhered to. So, if you’re going to obliterate that, there should be a compelling reason.

Also also, if Darth Maul can be cut in half, fall into a pit and come out of it fine, then I’m going to re-light my candle for Han Solo, who only got stabbed once by a blade that cauterizes as it cuts. :) Come to think of it, everyone who has fallen into a “bottomless” pit in Star Wars has always come back. That means it’s quite likely Darth Sidious is hanging out somewhere waiting for a re-entrance.

Nah, it’s part of what makes him complex. He starts out an emotional kid, then he presumably lives a hard life that we will see turns him in to a selfish, hardened pirate, but that kernel of goodness betrays him. I can see him spending all his time from this new movie until A New Hope trying to jettison or bury that good guy and be a true scoundrel, but the moment when he caves in and saves Luke is his turning point. In that sense, Solo kinda bookends his life and evolution.

Yeah, I guess I can see that, but they leave this movie on their way to see Jabba. I suppose you’re right about there being a decent number of years in the middle, because he has to do something big to piss off Jabba in the meantime...

But wouldn’t he have acted differently in the future if his first successful heist had funded the beginnings of the rebellion? Wouldn’t there at least be some reference to that? That bit seemed a little too forced (no pun intended!). It would have been preferable to me that Han had no connection at all with the Rebellion before he met Luke at Mos Eisley.

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

Well, I view it like this. Han clearly never does anything according to a plan. He shoots from the hip at everything, and makes his mind up about things on the spot. To me, it seems natural that he was confronted with these people that need help against an Empire that has shit on him from day one, and decided to do the right thing for them. It was a personal decision, not an ideological one. He’s not thinking past that moment or about any rebellion. Besides which, I’m not convinced this group here is the core and genesis of the rebellion we see in A New Hope , which appears to be formed from former establishment military and politicians.

So Han goes on his way seeking his own fortune and never gives it another thought. It’s natural we would never hear reference to it. I have trouble with a lot of things in the Star Wars saga, but this isn’t one of them.

So the “rebellion” line is just a throwaway one to make people like you and me debate on online chat forums? =)

I can see Han never giving it another thought, or not even caring anything about a burgeoning rebellion except related to how he could make some money somehow because of it.

Maybe? I mean, it’s such a big galaxy. Maybe there were lots of factions that joined for the common cause? I dunno, I”m kind of leaving it there.

Yes, Han’s primary motivation is what’s right in front of him. Exactly. He cared about people individually (e.g: Kira, Chewie), but the big transition was moving to care about something bigger than him.
