The worst soldering job that somehow manages to work.

Kinja'd!!!

Look at it, behold it’s ugliness!

Since I assembled my PC the other day, I wanted a headset with a mic for super sweaty tryhard siege sessions. The Xbox headset goes through the controller and some magic happens and it only needs one aux cord to give and receive audio.

So I removed the mic from the Xbox headset and soldered it to a spare aux cord laying around, and wa-la! Now I have a working mic for PC (I tested it.) Now I just need to put it back into the headset and my Xbox headset will now work on PC.

Not too bad, actually. You’ll get it with a little more practice and destruction of a few things.

I’m still not as good at soldering as I’d like to be, but I keep trying (and fucking things up). I blame it on my dad - the only soldering tool we had when I was growing up was a 100/130 watt soldering gun - go big or go home. Great for heavy-duty industrial stuff, not so great for delicate work. Since it heated up so hot so fast, I never learned to have the patience to wait for a dinky 25 watt iron to heat up. I have messed up a few things trying to do them quickly with a big gun when I damn well knew I should have been using something else with a little less grunt.

The first project I made was a Heathkit 12V regulated power supply, and it was clunky enough that my brutal technique was acceptable. I was given that kit so that I could turn the old German-made Blaupunkt Frankfurt out of mom’s VW Dasher Wagon, my first car, into a stereo for my bedroom. It worked well for years until I got a real stereo system. I had that power supply for ages, but eventually it died, and I found that I could get the same power either from a wall-wart or just by reusing a spare AT or ATX power supply. I do wish I still had that old Blaupunkt though...
