My son was jumping out of the van and tripped, with the phone in his hand. He basically slammed it face down on the driveway. He’s fine, but the phone, not so much.

iPhone SE?

Broke your phone? That’s a paddlin

Eh, it was an accident. I watched it happen.

5S. My old phone, passed down when we moved up to an SE.

I stopped using a case on my 5S because if I break it I’ll be forced to upgrade. All of the corners are chipped but otherwise nothing.

I don’t expect to be forced to upgrade. The glass won’t be cheap because I’m having Apple replace it (I had another glass replaced at a mall kiosk, and it was cheap, but not as good).

I had an I phone 5, dropped in on the road going 20 mph, would not break. I still use it like an Ipod.

The last time I bought a case, the salesman at the Best Buy took a phone and threw it across the room to demonstrate the case. That’s the case my son had, but he really slammed it down hard, and I’d bet that even one of those big Otterbox cases wouldn’t have saved it.

Acrylic screen protecter, mine has saved my screen lots.

Years ago my wife was strapping the boy into his seat while tantruming. He kicked her phone, hit the concrete, back flew off and the SD card got broke in half. All her photos of baby Sam gone. All photos taken from that phone gone. Bummer. I had her since sign up for google plus and google photos so it’s all backed up now.

At least it’s easy to swap the screen, then. I’m using a pretty beat and well-used 5 currently. I’ll probably pick up an SE soonish.

If/when I have kids I’m only ever going to buy them those mil-spec tough phones for that very reason. Pricey, but still cheaper than buying a new phone every few months.

My rule - I pay for the insurance, the kids pay for the deductible if they break their phone . So far, only my oldest has had to get a replacement. The youngest decided that getting his phone repaired wasn’t worth it. He was saving up for a Switch.

Hopefully it’s just the glass. Screen seems to be okay. Or are they all one in the same?

I used to mandate the big Otterbox cases on their phones. But I’m not sure even one of those would have saved it. He smacked it down really hard.

I have never paid for the insurance, and so far, I think I’ve come out ahead, even with this screen and one out-of-warranty replacement.

Unfortunately, they’re a single unit.

My wife’s 5 was a tank.

$90 at Batteries+Bulbs with a 6-month warranty.
Best I’ve found and you get it back in an hour or two. The repairs might be spotty, but at least you’re covered locally.
Insurance is around $10-$15/mo so, IMHO, it’s a lot better to self-insure against common things like this.
Even an Otterbox Defender can’t stop a face-down drop, especially onto a protrustion.

I just swapped the whole screen between a dead iPhone and a cracked iPhone. Took about twenty minutes. You could probably find a dead iPhone with good glass for cheaper than what Apple charges for a swap.

Yeah, for a kid I’d go that route. I just can’t make a choice to buy a new phone when mine works perfectly fine...but professional life with a 16gig 5S can be hell (oh, you want us to install Skype for Business? Hold on, I’m not travelling for a few weeks so I guess I can delete google maps for now...). So I’m letting nature take its course.

My little brother managed to drop his first smartphone in the damn ocean not two weeks after getting it.

That phone is fiiiiine. Still full useable and all i bet, save for a few crack lines.
Mine ate a rocky driveway face first and concentrated more force into the display leaving it not really useable. My old one only smashed the top corner with a bunch of long cracks and still works well after a year or so...

It seems to be working fine, but you might slice a finger if you’re not careful.

Could always put a cheap screen protector on it to keep it useable, but a week-long lesson in caring for ones things :P

He wasn’t being negligent at all. It was just an accident.

Did it have one of those tempered glass screen protectors?
![]() 05/27/2018 at 19:32 |

My rule: if I pay for the phone, I get to choose the case.

No screen protector. Probably wouldn’t have helped.

That’s a good rule. I tried it too. Just minutes after me telling her to put it back in the case, my daughter knocked her phone off the counter onto a tile floor, shattering the glass. Piggy bank broken the next day to get the funds to pay for the deductible. Lesson learned.

We’ll never know, but the claims are nothing short of miraculous.

My daughter flushed her phone down a toilet at Aunt Susie’s house. I laughed ‘til my sides ached about going and putting some more minutes on Aunt Susie’s toilet.

Self-insure. And tempered glass screen protectors.
