I’m going to Barcelona in early August and I’ll probably rent a small car for a week to be able to get around easier, as I’ll be living a bit outside the city.

Before I start googling and doing more research, does anyone have any experiences renting a car there right off the bat?

I wanna get the cheapest thing possible.

You don’t need a car in Barcelona. The metro there is fantastic. Take the bus or train from the airport if you’re flying. You can walk everywhere as well. Beautiful city with beautiful people.

My two times in Europe I’ve rented with Sixt. Wasn’t the cheapest, but I had a great experience both times.

I always found the major brand names (excluding airport locations) were just about as cheap as any of the second-tier companies. But definitely use as much mass transit as you can when visiting the city — it’ll save you a fortune in parking and hassles.

But for a lot of other places out in the country, driving is the way to go. As gearheads, driving and roads are just as much a part of the culture as food and architecture :D

When we went there we booked with autoeurope. It was like $75 for a Fiat 500 for the week (off season).

I’ve heard horror stories about booking through a rental company directly and having a lot of mysterious charges appear (You asked us to refill the tank! There is an extra scratch!) And the last time I booked with Avis directly they charged us an extra tank of gas we did not ask for. With Autoeurope they didn’t even look at the car when we returned it, no problems at all.

Also, don’t speed. Lots of cameras and you will be escorted to an ATM if pulled over.

The cheapest would be to steal one.

A well-executed European heist is a reward all its own.

I agree, whenever I travel somewhere I always use public transport and never coop myself up in a car, I wann experience the city. Getting lost somewhere is always the best part!

However this time we’ll be traveling further out, to see some national parks and stuff, so I’ll need a ride where I don’t depend on a bus schedule.

Thanks for the tip! So you’re saying I shouldn’t just go for the airport rental? That was my initial idea as it was the most practical...

I’ve rented twice in Barcelona. Cheapest way is to go through a third party like Expedia. Much cheaper than going direct through the renters. The staff hate it and will try upsell you a lot because the prices are so low.

Warning though I ended up with this soul sucking hybrid corolla last time. You don’t really need a car to get around Barcelona though. The public transport is excellent

It depends on the city. Some places, airport surcharges can make the rental double the price of other area locations.

But if you’re flying into BCN and back out from the same airport at the end of the rental period, the convenience could be totally worth it for you. In the scheme of things (compared to the price or airfare) it might just be easiest to go with the airport.

Make sure you go up to the Montserrat monastery near Barcelona. I never had a car and missed out on a lot. If I had a car, I probably would have taken a roadtrip up to the Pyrenees, mayve even to Andorra (extra passport stamp!).

Northeast Spain/Catalonia is fantastic. By the way, where in Croatia do you live?

Check for chartered buses to the parks.

Also, download a map of the area into your phone (google maps lets you do it)
