Any Oppo’s have side businesses? The wife and I are talking about dipping our toes into bumper stickers and tee shirts. We’ve got quite a few ideas for a series of bumper stickers we haven’t seen yet, but we have absolutely no idea where to start... How does Oppo make money other than the way you make money?

I’ve thought about it many times. Maybe just getting a part time job detailing cars at the local porsche dealer or something.

I used to flip phones, then I used to flip computers. I’m curious into flipping motorcycles as my next venture. :) I never did it for the money, it was just something fun to do.

Work has always been enough for me, personally. But if I were to do it, I would want to make it something fun - that I enjoy doing. So it doesn’t become a drag.
And who knows, if you gain some success, perhaps it could turn into your career? I have a few friends and family that have managed to pull that off, so give it a shot!

Rule number one. Advertise, advertise, advertise. “word of mouth” advertisements is not something to be proud of. Next time a small business owner proudly proclaims that they only use word of mouth, ask them how much growth they’ve experienced in the past 6 months.
Make a company page on Google, then fill in as much info as possible so people can look you up. Doesn’t matter how small you are, you want an online presence. Google adwords is the easiest way to get into online advertisements. They walk you through the steps and you need zero prior advertising experience. It’s also cheap (if you want it to be).
I’ve done a lot of side jobs

Here’s some ideas:
Make stickers that stick on the outside of cars $2 more than ones that stick on the inside of the rear window and quarter panes.
Sell plastic widgets and liquids to take off and clean old stickers and glue residue.
Make stickers based on the popular ones, but with unpopular opinions or too much information, like
“My other car is a CPO Accord!”, “If you can read this, you’re maintaining good driving distance!”, “No baby on board, but I wanna live too!, “No baby on board. She won’t stop eating the batter!”
Free “Its a Jeep thing” stickers on orders over $25, but only if you can prove you don’t own any Jeeps.
Make stickers with amazing, positive and inspirational quotes that you can’t disagree with from the most vilified people, like “As in everything, nature is the best instructor” - Adolf Hitler (in tiny letters)

I think Teespring will sell your tshirt design and take a cut of the sales but you don’t need to do much more than upload the art.
For me the closest I come is that my car habit is self sustaining in that I usually don’t lose money on my projects but I don’t really profit either.

I’ve flipped stuff from local estate sales and auctions on ebay and other venues since I was a student. Sometimes the profit margins are better than others (especially as some of it can be labor intenstive, like breaking up stamp collections), but generally I have came out ahead, and enjoyed the work at the same time.

I did/do automotive wiring on the side. You have to know your basic theory, and startup costs can be quite a bit (I think ~$400 or so for me, wires, fittings, crimpers, etc), but you can make pretty good money. A lot of people HATE wiring, and are willing to pay for some pretty simple jobs. Plus given shop rates of about $100 an hour, even going halfway you can will find a market. Caveat is you have to be pretty decent at it.
I think my next one might be some simple welding.

I do AV for my day job and tried getting into consulting after work and on weekends, but man is that hard to get into with all the big time automation companies out here.

I started teaching high school classes as my side hustle a few years ago and now it is my main hustle. Now I’m back in school so I can get a new main hustle, because teaching is a shitshow of a main hustle. Probably a little more involved than you’re looking for. My wife is an artist and runs a few side hustles. Clothing company, photography, body art... all sorts of stuff. She’s been doing this stuff since she was a teenager (started with making custom t shirts using her artwork), so she has gotten pretty good at it.

Yea A/V and automation is particularly difficult (to get the work). The way that I have been successful there is usually when I show up at a business or house to do something IT/car related and they’ve either had a bad experience with an A/V company and or received a ridiculous quote. Then I’m like “whaddup, I’ll do that for half price.”
I could be as complex as a movie theater in their house, but most of the time its someone who’s been told it will cost $1500 to mount their TV above their fireplace and that they need to buy $300 worth of cables etc...

It’s either that or people want to pay $100 to mount a TV and run cables behind the wall and I have to provide all the parts.

That much I will do haha. I keep a bunch of those Cheetah tilt mounts on hand. They’re $25 and come with an HDMI cable. If it’s a simple mount on drywall I’ll throw it up, run the wires in the wall, leave em a pull for any additional wires for $100. I charge them for the mount, and if they want it to look pretty I will sell them the finishing plates. I also keep IR extenders in stock. They’re an easy up sell.

If you’re already there that makes sense. When I tried setting myself up to do work on my own on the side and $100 for the job when it costs me $20 in fuel, $25 for the mount, and the credenza under the TV has 400lbs of glassware in it that has to be moved before you can get to the wall... yea.
I’ve been doing some weekend work for cash for some guy’s company and it’s worked out a lot better than going on my own even though its no as reliable as I’d like. Show up with my tools, leave with cash. No pressure.
