Yes, it’s a lockable storage cubby, and a weird factory option for some Toyotas in Japan.
Bonus points for anyone who figures out what car the first picture is from... it’s not as easy as it first appears...

Generally, I think labeling your secrets is a good way to expose them.
In any event Japan must have more considerate thieves, I’m pretty sure in the US if they couldn’t break the locked door open, they’d just rip out the entire unit. Hell, in college a friend of mine had his whole ashtray stolen because it had some loose change in it.

Toyota Crown?
And that’s basically the same as a lockable glove box, no?

Are JDM cars usually labeled in English?

Strangely, yes. A mixture of switches tend to get labeled in English where they can grab them from parts bins.

The Chevy Impala infotainment screen powers up to reveal a little storage cubby. I don’t think there’s a “lock” per se but the car also needs to be turned on for it to operate. It’s in some other GM vehicles as well.

Mark II Qualis; and yes it’s like a lockable glove box, but glove boxes aren’t usually labeled “Secret Glove Box”
