An Idea/Proposal: PNW Oppo Clunker Cruise

So, I was greatly inspired by Tristan driving his sweet Studebaker on the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I know a few of us have older projects/classics/heaps in the Northern PNW and thought that it would be cool to have a drive someday. What do people think?

If I had to pick a location, I’d probably choose Samish Island, Edison, La Connor area. Quiet and cool in the summer. Plus, there is no way I am taking my truck on the I-5.

Here are a few that I could think of within a couple hundred miles (that run/drive):

All of my cars are project beaters... Unfortunately, my summer is now consumed by house projects between the house we’re buying, the house we’re selling and the house we own in Florida that has shitty renters I’m trying to evict.

And I just realized my number of project houses is equal to my number of project cars... Ouch.

I support this! Hopefully I’ll be acquiring a clunker truck soon that could join in.

The logistics might be difficult, since I’d not drive whatever I buy on the highway either, which makes Samish Island an 8-hour drive for me (Portland area) and this outing a full-weekend event.

So does “clunker cruise” just mean “bring your worse car”? Because I know my C63 doesn’t qualify, but that just affords me an opportunity to fulfill my longtime threat to bring my high-mileage, wet-dog-smelling 4Runner to an Oppo meet. Or do I have to go out and buy some kind of interesting old thing like the cool vehicles depicted above?

Well the sway bar end links are just beginning to wear so if you listen real close with the windows up and radio off, you might hear a bit of a clunk over the right bumps!

And I come to realize that I’ve never owned a car that could really be called this. Even if fairly old, I always maintained them, so they never suffer from the long-term neglect necessary to transition.

I was looking for a suitable ride on CL (probably couldn’t get a real heap roadworthy in this time, even if I had the time) or Turo (found a couple potentials, but you can’t search by terms like “tetanus”).

If I still lived near my parents, they have like an entire junkyard worth of old cars I could get into marginal shape for this, but I’d never trust one for a drive this far even after getting them running...

If this is the plan, maybe my wife will let me take her car. I’m on the title and it is the “worst car” we own. I just don’t know how well that would go over with her if I admitted why I was taking her car, especially since she already wants a new one.

I think the 4Runner counts! I didn’t exactly have a set criteria for this. I more just wanted to have another PNW meet (smaller/less of a cruise maybe) where people could bring a different car.
