I’ve been driving a Golf for the past couple of days. 1.5 litre petrol engine, seven speed DSG with fairly high gearing and an engine which spends a surprising amount of its time stopped. Go down a modest slope and it’ll stop. Slow down in traffic and it’ll do the same (although strangely it’ll often start as soon as you come to a halt). Despite all that, this is claimed to be the average fuel consumption (don’t like l/100 km? Google is your friend). The petrol engine is a problem of course but even so it’s far from impressive.

30 mpg is pretty good. About what I would expect from a motor that size in a car that size. I got 19.6L/100 this morning when I filled up.

EPC. Electronic Performance Control, or stability control. It goes out with the other lights when you start the engine.

I once borrowed my father’s diesel Focus for a long journey and it did 4.3 l/100 km. No fancy start/stop or coasting.

Uh....I get 6.3L / 100km in my 2009 Accent with only a 5-speed manual, and no start stop....
My Accent would be 200kg lighter, but it has a larger engine than the Golf (1.6L vs the Golf’s 1.5L) and I imagine the Accent’s engine is far less technically innovative, so that economy on the Golf seems sortof crummy to me!

Drove a 68 hp 1.2 Citroën C3 a couple of weekends ago; it averaged 6.0l/100 km on the highway. My 160 hp MX-5 averages 6.5 combined. ¯\_()_/¯

But you’re never on boost.

Aerodynamics and gearing? The C3 might be a bit underpowered for efficient higher speed traveling as well?
My diesel Focus wagon did about 4.8 L/100km I believe.

I got 6.4l/100km out of my Mk7 Golf with a 1.8l/5speed manual very regularly. I’m a bit surprised the 1.5l/DSG didn’t do better, unless it was city only driving.

That’s more like it.
My father’s diesel Focus will do 4.3 on along journey.

I don’t have boost as my engine is NA! :P
But I thought the point of turbocharging smaller engines was to increase fuel economy and power for the size of the engine?

Yeah, the C3 is awful at that. Turning 3500-3600 rpm at 120 kph (redline at 5800 or thereabouts). Still, combined consumption was 6.8 I think, so it’s not like it’s any more economical in town.

I’m pleasantly surprised, it’s 1-1,5l less than what my MR2 used.
The Roadster is quite frugal as well, I’d wager?

Yea, that wouldn’t help.

Sometimes you get neither power or economy.
It’s easier to get a good score on the old European economy test with a tiny engine and turbo. Manufacturers got very good at getting the high test scores that were unachievable in the real world.

Yes. It wasn’t very economical in normal driving either.

That whole stop-start thing just bugs me... never been in a car that did it well/smoothly and it still gives me the heebeejeebees starting the motor over and over and over and over again...
