How bad a decision would this be?

Only way that car runs perfectly is if it just returned from a $X000 service. Need more information

All M3s are simultaneously Bad Decisions and Good Decisions too.
-Maintenance
-Parts
BUT
+Fun
+Prestige
+Convertible
As you can see, the arbitrary list I made has 2 negatives but THREE positives, and thus adds up to a net Good Decision.

So long as you’re ok with buying it, then buying it again a piece at a time, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

There are worse ideas out there.

Dig it. On one hand...one of my favorite cars. On the other....
it is a high mileage used BMW M3. Vanos, subframe...it just scares the crap out of me I could easily see it on jack stands as often as I am driving it.

If it was a coupe or sedan, I’d go NP, but I give any M3 droptop a hard pass.

Convertible need to be on both lists, or neither. Because they’re expensive, difficult, and time consuming to fix when they stop working. Or when they leak. And when water gets into control models from said leak.

$7k for a cab with what is nowadays middling mileage and a nice interior is about right.
Check subframes; get cooling system maintenance info; do a PPI.
I would totally buy an E36 M3 assuming it was pretty clean and this one looks to be decent.

Meth is a worse idea.

I am a HUGE convertible fan so this car speaks to me.

I had a $3300 automatic shitbox 98 M3 and enjoyed the hell out of it, so a decently well sorted one with a roof that comes off and a third pedal can only be even better.

The E36 M3 is probably the easiest on the wallet. Most parts are interchangeable with the vanilla E36s and the S52 isn’t nearly as high strung as other M car engines.
