Beloved by the Brazilian offroading community, this small capable SUV is a terrible terrible outdated monstrosity, as most national cars here tend to be.

Kinja'd!!!

It is powered by a 140HP 2.0 I4 and mated to an ancient CVT (or 5 speed manual) and 4WD with a central locking diff and low range.

Kinja'd!!!

Here you can see the “double manual”.

Kinja'd!!!

The TR4 is based on the ancient Pajero iO, which became a sales success here in Brazil as a small capable off-roader and therefore was cursed with national production and a dedicated factory.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the interior. It looks like it’s from the late 1980 because it is. But in 2015

Kinja'd!!!

Also, there was also rally version you could buy from the factory and selected dealerships.

What’s the base price? Because I have sick feeling that it would sell here in the States.

Side note: you call it a monstrosity but it only truly becomes one when the only transmission was a CVT.

I like it. It’s like a cute baby Pajero.

Base price was around $18k in 2015 when production ended, but bear in mind that the base Corolla here costs the same.

The cute baby Pajero will always be the first iO

You could have it with a 5speed manual tho.

Wait, $18k Brasilian Real or USD?

Both reasonable, just one more than the other.

USD

That would work, because Mitsubishi dealers here would mark them down at least $4k to move them off the lot. I’m not trying to be a smartass, that’s just about what it takes to move Mitsu these days.

It doesn’t look so bad to me, but I have a soft sport for short-wheelbase off-roaders. Especially little (i.e. not American) ones

No it won’t, when’s the last time you saw a factory-new short wheelbase body on frame transfer-cased offroader 4-to-5-seater that wasn’t a Wrangler?

It’s a station wagon sort of thing...we all say we want this specific thing and that we’d buy them if offered, but then no one actually buys them...
