i have a hard time seeing the point of that speed but its cool to see.

Unimogs can do this from the factory. Apparently, due to reasons I only barely understand, this results in torque great enough to climb over damn near anything.

the slower you go the more torque you get. the more torque you get the more you can climb over anything.

Wow.

mogs i get because they are designed to haul very heavy loads and tow crazy weights. this tho....

Rig up some servos for the steering, and leave your spotter at home.

It’s pretty useful to have super low gears like that when you’re on a very low traction surface and you will just dig holes of you spin wheels. Also if you don’t have much power and want to still go where the big boys go, much easier and cheaper to add a doubler than swap an engine to add power, and more reliable than most engine upgrades.

i understand the principles and advantages of doublers but this ratio seems pointless. when would 530:1 be better than 235:1?

Pretty much

Dude just stuck at least both arms if not more of his body under a moving vehicle.

Yes he did. I don’t think he was in too much danger at those speeds but you never know

I’d be less worried about actually being ran over and more about the truck losing traction and slipping down the rock.

This is a good point, but that rock looked pretty tacky.

with drive by wire and electric power steering becoming the norm, this isn’t too implausible.

I want to watch this truck very slowly pull a house off its foundation

if you are like me and wonder what kind of speed you could get floored with this ratio, wonder no more

sometimes to get where you’re going...you gotta go over the big rock.

I’ll admit, there are probably very few situations that actually require the tripler over a doubler, and the compromises of shortening the rear shaft and lengthening the front likely take away from that somewhat. And yeah, even the Niva does pretty damn well just in regular low range in regards to idling over things, even with all of the 70hp or whatever it puts out.

Having lower gears helps you crawl up stuff. It gets pretty complicated, but here’s a nice tutorial.
