After 4 years of roughing it with no parking, I bought a garage! I’ll probably have to spend the first week hanging curtains, pictures, and such (since there appears to be a house included in the deal), but then I want to finish the garage to make it a usable shop. I need the Oppo hive mind to answer a few questions:
1. Floor coating. I assumed one of the epoxy kits from hardware stores would be the way to go, but I read about a single-application polyurea that sounds easier.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Any Oppo floor experts out there? Anyone make a huge mistake that I should avoid?
2. Things to do before insulation and dry wall. I’m having a 220 outlet put in, anything else I should do first? I’m planning on slapping in the typical rolled fiberglass insulation and then drywall.
Any other ideas? Things you wish you had or had not done? Tips on convincing my wife that an empty garage must be filled by at least two unfinished project cars at all times?
Thanks!

The lift is actually cheaper than I expected- not quite into my budget, but dangerously close!

Congratulations! I am moving into a townhouse tomorrow, also with my own two car garage (I’ve never garage parked a car, not even when I was in high school)

Get a nice compressor, and run the lines so that they don’t get in the way of future cords and work.

Congrats to you as well!

That’s a good idea. I was preparing for an air compressor and welder when I thought of the 220 outlet, but air piping would be a cool feature.

Polyurea is awesome stuff, it is also resistant to fuel and oil. I think prep is just high pressure wash.

If you do, and you want it extra right, do copper tubing so you won’t have to worry about leaks. PVC is much easier, but it will leak under high pressure, so you have to always turn the air off.

Plumb up a sink for washing stuff. I get the stink-eye every time I walk into the house with greasy hands, yelled at if I use the kitchen sink to clean up. Hey, it’s stainless steel and the closest one to the garage!

Consider pegboard instead of drywall if you can live with it, especially if you will be using it like a shop, since you don’t have anything up yet. Mine is dry walled and I am constantly punching holes in it to put stuff on the walls, which isn’t great for it. The former owners did the same, so there are all kind of stupid holes in it.

you could be like me and just throw junk all over...

lots of outlets, or a couple of drop-cord reels
I cant tell from the picture what kind of lights you have, but it looks plenty bright.
Heavy duty shelving - Muscle rack or equivalent
post pics when you are done! Congrats on the new abode

Attic ladder so you can access the space above the garage for additional storage. I see you have the traditional access hole, but a built in ladder will make things much safer and easier if you intend to use that space.

Not too much experience here, but I’ve seen people who have done the floor in white, which despite a greater need to clean, looked great, and created a ton more ambient light under cars and such.

Couple things. Adding a sub panel instead of aljust an outlet will make adding additional outlets easier.
Consider OSB instead of drywall. No need to search for a stud, screw anywhere. Also easier to remove a panel instead of having to mud and tape if you need to remove.
I installed a 2x4 along the top of the wall in case I need a more solid support than the 1 by I will be putting up
A ceiling fan, an exhaust fan if keeping hatch, double it as vent.
Then fill with projects and project cars .

PVC will end up exploding at some point too.

Yup, I’ve seen that happen. Scared the ever living shit out of me.

Good idea. Those are pretty easy to install.

Wow, OSB used to be cheap, what happened? I checked Home Depot and Lowe’s and OSB was almost twice as much as drywall. It has been a while since I did any carpentry so maybe I’m just remembering the time when a Coke was 50 cents and particle board was a few bucks per sheet.
Exhaust fan is a good idea since I hope to be doing a little work when it’s too cold to open the door.

I also put a screen door on my garage door that goes to the house. The last month we have been cracking the garage door and windows so cool night air flows through the house.

Maybe put some kind of tin barrier around the bottom so you don’t smash the drywall.

Second the OSB.
