I’ve heard about it but I never tried until recently. If you pull up behind the bottom of the back seats, the bottoms fold up snugly behind the front seats, giving you ability to fold the seats completely down. This will help massively with my move this weekend. When I moved before I didn’t know this and the angle of the seat when not down limits a lot of usable space.

Yep, my old car could do that, and I think my new one too. Didn’t use it for my move though because I needed that narrow space between the front and rear seats for my bike.

I stumbled upon this totally by accident, when I first got the FocuST the middle seat belt receptacle was lodged into the seat. I figured one of the assembly people at the Ford plant were a little hungover when they installed the seat... so I tried pulling at the cushion to get it out. The bottom popped up and I thought I broke the damn thing! Then I realized it was on a hinge, and the other portion did the same thing.

It’s actually a pretty awesome design feature that’s never mentioned anywhere except buried deep in the owner’s manual. I’ve transported SETS of wheels (like 8 wheels at once), tables, and moved twice with the thing.

This was the only way to flip down the seats in my old WJ Grand Cherokee. It made for a nice large cargo cavity.

I’m able to fit a lot more in this than I Thought. The low ride height makes putting things in a breeze.

It’s very helpful. I’ve already stuffed quite a few boxes in and I still have floor space before I have to start stacking. My gf has a rental equinox (if you never saw my other post, she has a focus as well but got hit pretty hard by someone) and there’s no doubt we can get all the boxed stuff left and other small things in that once I’m done. Tomorrow is just the few big things, this should be pretty nice.

Well damn I didn’t know that. I’ve had it for a few years now too.

Neat, now I have to see if SWMBO’s Mazda 3 does the same. Meanwhile, SX4 hatchbacks/crossovers do it differently by flipping up the whole seat up, leaving a flat floor.

I used to have a kona blue. Gave it up for a hot pepper red. I still miss it sometimes

Had a back one too. Much prefer the blue. I actually wanted a red one but the wife shot me down. I was gonna do a little boss theme. Granted she’s the one that DDs it.

The back of that reminds me of her rental equinox. The sides protrude much more heavily than my ST. It takes away a lot of usable space. I guess it must be the big wheel wells on the equinox.

The main time I use this trick, aside from when moving boxes/etc, is when I do my winter/summer wheel swaps. Fold it all down, put the tires in there in one flat layer, drive to the tire place, they do the swap, then the tires are put back in for the trip back.

The only problem is that the floor isn’t flat, with a drop from the hatch floor height to the seat back floor height.

This just pushed the SX4 a little higher on my list. I want something cheap that likes gravel a little better than the Fiat to take camping.

Lol. Many if not most cars in or from Europe do this.

they either, like the Focus, lift up from the rear. or

Lift an inch or two from the front, allowing the base to slide forward from there you lift the rear of the seat like the Focus seat.

Like this older gen VW Polo.

The eighth and ninth gen Civic and Fit/Jazz do it better though.

Kinja'd!!!

Where the base drops down onto the floor as you drop the seat backs down, but also the seat base folds up.

When we still had an SX4 my wife and I brought home a four-drawer lateral file cabinet in it like the one in the pic below. The cabinet fit through the hatch head first. We’d never be able to do that with the Mazda3.

These are the kinds of things I bought it for so I’m glad. It’s something I wasn’t expecting because I’ve driven a coupe and a small sedan as DD’s before this which it wouldn’t make sense for something like this as there’s no headspace anyways.

To me it’s more of a reason to why I don’t need a crossover.

The “magic seats” are probably my favorite thing about our Fit

Old RAV4s work that way

The rear seat base in mine doesn’t go up but I do like it on other cars.

It means I can properly clean underneath the rear bench where you’ll be surprised how much crap gets down into.

Worst case

It makes fantastic sense. Such a practical thing.
