Drove over 200 miles of beautiful wide open  practially empty, unpoliced Utah and Wyoming roads with 70 and 80mph limits...In a shitty Elantra

Its fine till about 65mph and then it gets tons of wind and road noise, wishy washy steering, spongy brakes and a weak ass engine. Wishing so bad I was driving my car or at least a good midsize sedan. Next time, I am upgrading to luxury.

Well at least you’ll feel better when you get to the Tetons. Possibly my favorite place in the world.

Yep, I’ve had that experience with a rental Forte on a road with a 75mph speed limit. Super squirrely once you got up to those speeds.

The chevy 2500 with the Duramax is one of the most popular vehicles in this neck of the woods for a reason. I’ve done Billings to Kalispell runs without stopping for fuel and the cruise set to 85 but I’m sure I had to pee 6 times.

Dualies everywhere, also so many 4 Runners, Tacos and quite a few Golf wagons surprisingly.

I had a rental Accent once. It’s unpleasant to drive on the highway. I imagine the Elantra is great in comparison!

There must be a vw dealer nearby, they are otherwise rare in the mountain west.

Dont want either. Saw a white C7 Corvette on the way. Now THAT is a car which can really stretch its legs on these roads

I personally prefer a Challenger or Charger with a V8. Those things are incredible highway cruisers, especially with the radar cruise!

Those are some great places. Where were you going to/from? Do you need/want any recommendations?

In July I’m heading up there with my wife for a vacation with my parents. I already sprung for a “luxury SUV” for the trip so I could pack us plus my parents & siblings in it so we can all get in on one pass. I also figured it’d be better for cruising the roads out there, although not as good as a car, but nobody had a wagon with a third row as a reservable option... Supposedly a Discovery or QX60 (I think, they promised 7/8 seats), and it was cheaper that all but cars that were too small to hold everyone.

Somewhere between St. Regis and the pass I got my doors blown off by a Bentley. That’s not a bad way to shrink Montana distances either.

The VW dealer in Salt Lake is quite successful. I see a lot of wagons around here.

My rental Elantra hated being between 65 and 85, so I recommend just keeping it at 90

flew into SLC. drove to Jackson last night. Grand Tetons today. Then drive to Yellowstone evening. We are staying near old faithful. return tuesday. Hoping to drive around and see all the main attractions and do some light hiking depending on the weather because either scattered Thunderstorm or rain is expected most of this weekend. First time here by the way.

That would be awesome or a big Mercedes like a 500E or similar. Do you remember back in the 90's when we didn’t have a speed limit? Those were the good ol’days. I made some crazy runs from Missoula to Butte or Missoula to Billings, average speeds were in the 80-90 mph range including stops!

On the way back, try going down 89 around Bear Lake down to Evanston. Take 150 out of Evanston (directly south, not the major highway). You can thank me later.

I do remember the Montanabahn but unfortunately I was never able to take advantage of it as back then I didn’t have the time or money for road trips.

That’s too bad, those were glorious and dangerous times. In all seriousness I think today’s average speeds are actually higher with the 80 mph limit. Because you always drive 5 over.

What surprises me every time I’m there are the secondary roads with 70mph limits. I’ll be cruising at 55 or 60 and then a 70mph limit sign flashes by and I have to remind myself “Oh yeah, Montana”.

Thanks. had to take 15south thru idaho(80mph limit wooho!) in the interest of time. Next time, I am upgrading to a much better car to enjoy the drive both to from and inside the park.

If it was a black/dark gray continental I saw one inside Yellowstone “wooshing” through the curves. It was fast.

So tough for me to choose between this and Yellowstone especially the Lamar Valley area.

Bummer, that’s the least scenic option... Even in a not great car, the scenery on the route I gave you makes up for it.

I went to Yellowstone the same trip and barely remember anything outside of the geysers & hot pools. I need to explore it more next time I go back.
