Another Delahaye for today? Oh, go on then.

Meet one of the two 165s, roadgoing versions (by Figoni et Falaschi ) of the V12 engined 145. Interestingly, one of these was shipped to America for the 1938 New York World’s fair but then found itself stuck in fiscal limbo for six years before turning up in California with a Cadillac V8 and matching automatic box. Eventually it was reunited with the V12 originally intended for it and normal service was restored.

Yes, it has a Cotal gearbox. Of course it has.

Cotal electromagnetic. Epicyclic gearbox but with electromagnets rather than hydraulic clutches and brake bands. You used a clutch to start but then changed gear without it. Separate reverser so in principle 4F/4R, in practice you were encouraged to reverse in third because reverse was much lower than forward and the extra torque in first/reverse would twist shafts.

You can just see the reverse lever here, behind the handbrake.
