If wool is such a good interior material, why don't more cars use it?

I’m not doubting it, but from what I hear it’s an amazing material and I can’t imagine it’d cost more than leather. So why don’t more cars have it as an option? Is is just a matter of fashion/prestige? Would it make sense to get your car upholstered with wool?

Americans don’t want nice things... like Toyota Centurys.

its not low maintenance and doesn’t clean easily. I mean leather isn’t low maintenance either but it is easy to clean and most “leather” seats aren’t full leather anyway....usually a very small amount of real leather actually.

Difficult and expensive to maintain, probably very expensive to replace.

MB had a woolcloth option into the 90s, but it was never extremely popular.

Which one is getting sexually harassed though? The human who has to sit in it, or the whale who gets his penis stolen?

Have you ever tried to shear a sheep? It’s not easy.

Jaguar had - may still have - the option for lambs wool floor mats. A friend had them in his XJ, they were incredibly lush. Purely amazing to put your foot on...but I have no idea how you keep them from getting ruined and nappy and just generally gross.

There are no good pictures I can quickly find to reference how great they felt and how deep they were, but this sorta helps

They shear ‘em for leather seats, too.

Just with bigger scissors.

I would want wool in any high-end vehicle of mine, to be honest, but that’s because I despise leather. (Leather used to be a lower-end option than wool, actually. And, even in the 1980s, vinyl was below cloth, instead of above it, in the product hierarchy.)

I believe the Range Rover Velar has a wool option marketed as a vegetarian option (it’s not vegan, as it’s still an animal product)?

My wool sweaters are dry clean only. I don’t know how you’d dry clean an entire car.

Also, it’s itchy.

But you could slaughter the sheep that produce the wool and make gyros with them! Now you have a nice interior and gyros!

Wool, even the finest, softest fabric, becomes prickly and itchy as soon as you perspire. Add to that that it’s hard to clean if it stains, and you would rather have easier synthetic fabrics that would be more comfortable.

Wool is great at wicking moisture, which means it’s great at absorbing ass, back, and thigh sweat.

Comfy, but might smell like a gym locker room over the long haul.
